D&D 5E Why do cities in Faerun have fortified walls?

I've been flipping though Forgotten Realms maps and reading through the 3.5 and 5 lore...and I can't figure out why most of cities have fortified walls, especially those on the Sword Coast. There don't seem to be many (any?) large standing armies capable of the sieges that would make classical...

Need some good putdowns from a snobbish noble

I agree with many of the responses from squints - 2008? Good snobbery isn't flatly cruel. It's considered gauche in rarified circles. The goal is to put a lesser status person in their place without the appearance of having put much thought or care into it. If you lean too far into the insult...

D&D 5E D&D Lore Changes: Multiversal Focus & Fey Goblins of Prehistory

Not an approach I'm excited about. BUT I do remember being a teen who adored crossover multiverse storytelling, imagining the interconnections of damn near every character and IP. So I'm sure people in that zone will get a serotonin kick seeing official 5e lore move this direction. I hope they...

Dragonlance Pitching Dragonlance to new players

The gods are gone The wizards have locked themselves in their towers The elves have retreated The kings are old and tired The knights are fat The terrors are asleep The dragons are dead ...and the common people have finally gotten some well deserved peace and quiet. Five generations of peace...

    D&D 5E Gimme your best villain one-liner!

"You're going to be so damn bored without me" The BBEG (an evil bard, impersonating a queen) in her final moments. It was funny but it haunted the party later.

D&D General The Art and the Artist: Discussing Problematic Issues in D&D

It wasn't you. I read something into Deset Gled's Firefly clip response that wasn't their intention. So it wasn't shade, it was just ironic.

D&D General What is Druidism in your game?

Druid's are pretty much reevaluated every time a player makes one at my table. The player's assumptions and wishes are my guidelines for what druidic culture and tradition is in that campaign.

This is is gold star shade. I'm not sure if it's intentional, but the heat that's rising off this is chef's kiss.

D&D General The Art and the Artist: Discussing Problematic Issues in D&D

After the ugliness with Rowling, I've been operating under the assumption that any living artist/author/musician/etc. I like is just a tweet away from disappointing me. And any dead artist is just a 'discovered letter' or 'family tell-all' away from being a creep or worse. I think it's...

Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

What would have to happen in the campaign for your character to change their opinion? If it's a character's belief - and not your own expressed through the lens of the campaign - then it can be changed within the story. Curious what the framework would be here, as a thought exercise.

D&D 5E Buying magic items, yes or no?

Yes but... Most cities that have vendors that sell magic items also have a "right of primacy" where royalty, nobility, guild leaders, etc. get first dibs on the item. It's theirs to refuse first, then to pass on to the 'commoners market'. This also allows items to be returned to the lineages...

Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

Interesting. I'm not that knowledgeable on AD&D. In current D&D how is it explained - in game - that the gods don't seem to take a stance or have much affect upon people who aren't actively their followers? I'm being slightly facetious, but it seems like a too-neat way to sidestep all the...

Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

If the gods exists and can grant favors and powers to those who observe/pray, why can't they punish or "learn" atheists directly? Direct godly intervention would be filled with as many horror stories about the downfall of non-believers as much as delivered miracles, you'd think. I'm guessing...

What is your biggest RPG heartbreak?

Mage the Ascension. It has so much potential but it's incredibly difficult to get a game off the ground for all but the most focused groups. Love to read it, hate to play it.

    D&D 5E [+] A Whole New World!

Four hundred years have passed since the human child, Prince Cyln, spoke his wish aloud to the dreadful Stone of Ire, "I wish everyone taller than me was dead". They were petulant words, born of a boy's anger, but the shadow that pulsed over the kingdoms was terrifying and absolute. From that...

    D&D General Nay-Theists Vs. Flat-Earth Atheists in D&D Worlds

I you believe gods can exists, but the beings that call themselves gods are false...then what constitutes a god? Is it nothing less than complete omniscience and omnipotence? Seems like they want Abrahamic goal posts. It takes a lot of spice out of pantheism and dispersed portfolios. (This is...

    D&D General Nay-Theists Vs. Flat-Earth Atheists in D&D Worlds

Late to replies but I've been following this fun thread. There's a fine balance between making religion (and various shades of atheism) inform the culture of my campaign and boring my players to death with the minutia of theology. I enjoy that world builders come here to 'bore' each other ;) On...

A supposedly great thing that I'll never watch again- Great media that left you cold

Since we're all griping... Star Wars, the movies and series : Never had much interest in them, even as a child. The original production/art design was amazing for its time and holds up very well today. The cast in the original movies are charming curmudgeons doing their best with some sparse...

D&D General Friday Fun: Merge Two Monsters

Goblinda A goblin crossed with Linda the Innkeeper. The goblin blood has made her less ornery and more pleasant to be around. The new, weird snickering when she takes your coin is a little creepy though.
