D&D 5E To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

I'd say it is a form of deception just like when I bluff while playing cards. A big difference in cards is everyone is expected to bluff and is on equal footing. As a DM I never do it, but if you have a table full of people that are all really attached to their characters and don't want them...

D&D 5E To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

If, hypothetically, WotC took out that sentence on fudging in the DMG in the errata I'm assuming we'd still have about the same ratio of GMs fudging. To my reading this discussion has been more on "do you think it is 'ethical' and 'good for the game' instead of 'do the rules support it'" so I...

D&D 5E To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

A question for those in favor of fudging: Would it be wrong in your mind for a player to decide on their own that they don't want to crit the monster because they want it to stay up longer or give someone else the kill, so they bluff that they rolled a 19 (or a miss) instead of a natural 20? I...

D&D 5E To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

A "Hail Mary" plan could still turn things around. Just because the DM doesn't see a way out of a situation doesn't mean that the players might not come up with a way out. I'd just find it very odd to think that a DM knows with 100% accuracy how things would have turned out if he hadn't fudged...

D&D 5E To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

What if by secretly changing the roll (from a crit to a normal hit), the DM changes a fight that would have come down to the wire to one where the PCs end up winning by a larger margin? Or having the BBEG stay up a round longer only to have the party all miss their following round(s) of attacks...

D&D 5E To fudge or not to fudge: that is the question

As a DM I'm transparent on rolls and never had a complaint in that area, I trust my players and want them to trust me. As a player, I'd like for the DM to at least be a better Poker play than I am if they're going to fudge and not simply think they are. I don't believe it is likely for a DM to...
