D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Well, I'll start by saying that you got my premise wrong. I'll finish up by advising you to brush up on your logical fallacies as your example of how I was supposedly guilty of the "No True Scottsman" fallacy is also wrong.

D&D General The D&D Monster I have never used (or faced) and probably never will.

Dang it! Gimme a second I'll go check Wikipedia as I don't even own a Monster Manual any more... ...skims several websites detailing the stranger D&D monsters... ...realizes how many strange monsters D&D really has... ...I don't know what to choose. There are so many that just make me laugh...

D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

This is interesting. It's also a great example of why I stick with reading non-fiction. I'm afraid the rabbit hole has gone too deep...

D&D General The D&D Monster I have never used (or faced) and probably never will.

That would be a long list as D&D had a ridiculous amount of monsters I never used back in the way back when machine when I played Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition, and I think they have even more now.

D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Less valuable? I don't understand how you think I am assigning value to a character, or even really what you mean by that statement. I'm a literature layman and don't understand the specialized language that goes along with it. I never said using non-human characters to examine humanity is a...

D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

I hate to use the term stereotype to describe what I am trying to say because of the negative connotations that go along with it but I am unsure of a better term to use. This is point I try to make with the post I made that you quote in the latter part of your post, aka, the quote that appears...

D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Well, in all fiction I have encountered non-humans generally follow the same pattern of being restricted by the tropes that are applied to the character. These tropes are then played up to highlight how they are different from humans. Human characters on the other hand are generally presented as...

D&D General Oh, the Humanity! Exotic Races, Anthropocentrism, Stereotypes & Roleplaying in D&D

The only issue I have with your post is the implied idea of "just playing yourself" is somehow a bad idea. I learned how to DM without any mentors, or teachers, or YouTube videos to instruct me or even give me a hint on how to do it. My original players had no idea as well as they learned to...

D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

They are. Non-Human characters in fiction are used as a lens through which we can examine the greater aspects that humans are capable of.

D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Ten thousand years ago maybe not. Now they would be completely alien to us. In addition to not having any of the understanding a modern human has, we have no idea if they would be capable of understanding things the way modern humans do. Considering their brain had significant physical...

D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

That is my point. I have no idea how you think this is circular reasoning in any sense of the term.

D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

All non-human characters are stereotypes of humans, thus they are less than human. The stereotype exists specifically to highlight how they are not human.

D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Well, all of the models you use as examples were built using things you can interact with. You can't interact with a non-human sentient, so how could you know your model is even remotely accurate?

D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

My original post. My post reworded to not cause offense by removing offensive terminology. Better?

D&D General What does D&D look like without Death on the Table?

How can killing a PC be hard? Killing a PC should be super easy, just have two dozen Red Dragons, thirty Stone Giants, and seven hundred Ogres show up all at the same time. That should do the trick!

D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Yay! I reiterate, considering intellect and understanding, Neanderthal would be completely alien to us. Your adherence to the idea that similarities in brain structure means similarities in intellect and understanding does not follow. We would need to hear first hand accounts from a Neanderthal...

D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

A Human playing an Elf can't be taken seriously as a Human has absolutely no idea of what it would be like to live for hundreds or thousands of years. Cultural notes are nothing but fluff, thus the only difference between humans and non-humans is the mechanical bonuses. Hence my position...

D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

We don't know what the brain patterns of Neanderthal are like, we do know that the physical makeup of their brains was significantly different. From the standpoint of intellect and understanding, Neanderthal would be so far removed from modern humans as to be completely alien to us. The fact...
