How Do You Feel About NPC Party Members (A Poll)

Indeed. Or they just conquer challenges outside their skill sets by employing creative or "outside-the-box" thinking. Makes the game more fun and the story more interesting in my experience. As a bonus, at times, the party will try avenues outside their primary skill-sets despite the lower odds...

How Do You Feel About NPC Party Members (A Poll)

I don't run modules. Among other reasons, because they are built with the "balanced party" in mind and often have parts that are virtually impossible to surmount without specific skill sets present. In fact, some of my favorite campaigns were ones where the party was made up of a single...

How Do You Feel About NPC Party Members (A Poll)

I just run games where the party couldn't lack something because their are no specific niches the PCs need to fill. I also allow the party to completely lack certain skills. If the party doesn't have any members that can pick locks, then they aren't going to enter the castle by picking the lock...

How Do You Feel About NPC Party Members (A Poll)

Never said their wasn't games that operate different than mine, that's a good thing as people like different things, like sushi, many people like it, I won't touch the stuff. I often have PCs hire NPCs to perform tasks for them. However, the things these NPCs do either happens "off screen" or...

How Do You Feel About NPC Party Members (A Poll)

NEVER!!! No DMPCs, no GMPCs, no NPCs that are members of "the party" the PCs belong to, no NPCs that "adventure" alongside the PCs. PCs are meant to be the movie stars and rock gods. The PCs are the main characters of the movie or TV show or novel or story. The PCs are unique in that regard...

How often do you enforce laws in your games?

Well, I don't do the D&D thing, so, all the time! A dozen town guard is a substantial threat. PCs tend to tread lightly in places where the law is enforced.

    Mundanity for Adventure/Campaign Inspiration

I'll go out on a limb and say it speaks to the excitement. After all, having players say things other than "I loot the bodies" or "I search for treasure" or even "I hit it with my axe" means your game is probably far more exciting than most. :)

D&D 5E Do You Prefer Sandbox or Party Level Areas In Your Game World?

I keep wondering how a player could possibly know if a DM used prepared notes or total improv. I mean, I guess if the DM showed the players their notes at the end of each session to prove that all the things the PCs had encountered were prepared ahead of time. Unless that happens I can't see how...

D&D 5E Do You Prefer Sandbox or Party Level Areas In Your Game World?

I played the Skyrim where the Imperial's were in charge. That game highlights why I detest both levels and a world where enemies level with the PC. At the beginning of the game when traveling in the long civilized areas I would occasionally get attacked by bandits, this made sense. However...

    Mundanity for Adventure/Campaign Inspiration

A large portion of TV shows do not feature fantastic elements of any kind, yet are full of intrigue or drama. In fact, it's only in recent years that the fantastical elements of fiction have become more prominent. Shows like 911 and the Chicago family, feature dangerous and dramatic situations...

How big are the biggest cities in your campaign world?

My games tend to follow the numbers in the chart. Within a country there might be a single large city, and perhaps a second smaller city. No more than a handful of towns, most of which will be on the smaller end of the scale. The Thorpe, hamlet, and village make up, by far, the vast majority of...

Worlds of Design: What Defines a RPG?

Haven't internalized anything, I haven't played M&M since the early days, far too complicated for my tastes. I am remembering the game wrong obviously, as you seem to know it better. I also have no idea what an array slot is...

Worlds of Design: What Defines a RPG?

They must have changed that in the newer editions. The default for M&M was PL 10, and that's where the PCs stayed unless the whole group agreed on an increase in PL.

Worlds of Design: What Defines a RPG?

I disagree with the progression part. Let's see... Classic Traveller has none even over long term play, if I remember correctly. Classic Traveller lacks any rules for progression, or so I was told by an old Traveller grognard. Mutants & Masterminds characters generally don't progress. The PCs...

    D&D 5E Barter Economy

So much of D&D is predicated on the idea of gathering wealth and magic items I have my doubts that a barter economy would work. Now, if you are running a game where the PCs are doing things other than killing things to get treasure it works quite well. I have run numerous non-D&D games where...

    In Praise of Dice

As Johnny said, a convention game is a different thing. If I were to run a game at a convention I think I would have a "plot armour" houserule in place beforehand. If a regular game, your character would have died, and you would be required to create a new character.

    In Praise of Dice

I really want these dice but I can't justify spending $120 on dice.
