D&D 5E Optimization and the +1 Weapon Principle

Then aren't we back at square 1? Trying to discern what a standardized rate of DPR is but without a solid way of comparing a feature that gives 3d6 damage now compared to +1 attack/damage over the next unknown number of rounds.

D&D 5E Optimization and the +1 Weapon Principle

Interesting. First thought is either a paladin or battle Master who goes for broke and burns all, or most, of there resources in round one. Samurai would do ok but really need SS/GWM to take off.

D&D 5E Optimization and the +1 Weapon Principle

if I'm understanding you correctly you would find the most optimized potential DPR/DPA combinations and then compare others to them with the addition of a +1 weapon factor. If they match or surpass the old standard they would be deemed a passing grade?

D&D 5E Optimization and the +1 Weapon Principle

I am currently running a published campaign for 3 different groups with entirely different party makeups and tracking all imperial data which I know is not everything but it is a good chunk of information to look at. I'm only 2 session in so far so it's too soon to tell but I'm generously...

D&D 5E Optimization and the +1 Weapon Principle

It probably would be easier to just state X is a reasonable mean and as long as you fall within a set margin of error from that point it's fine. So for your example of Nova potential what is a good bar to measure from? Are we taking feats into account? Does the Nova rely on RNG such as critical...

D&D 5E What you have on your DM screen

All my in person games have been put on a semi permanent hiatus until further notice so I haven't looked at my screen in a while. Apparently there's a sticky note on my screen that says intravenous Jello injection bolts.

    D&D 5E Variant Action Surge

Something I've kicked around is changing action surge to mimic haste without concentration and the lost action when it ends. The duration is set to last as many rounds equal to Con modifier. Trading the Nova from the standard AS for the flexibility of the haste effect would be alluring.

D&D General Why DPR Sucks: Discussing Whiteroom Theorycrafting

There isn't anything wrong with theory crafting DPR/DPT or anything else for that matter as long people are aware that it's mostly just for fun and doesn't have any strong connection to actual game play. Trying to optimize for damage is the easiest thing to focus on in 5e and also the poorest...

D&D 5E Do you play without Critical Hits?

Dnd realistically stop being deadly a few editions ago with cheap/fast healing and resurrection becoming a player option. It's just not in the base system to die permanently often. Any table can make the game deadly by having a solid grasp of the resource recover mechanics and using some...

D&D 5E Do you play without Critical Hits?

It's why i advocate skipping up to lv 3 for most groups. If the training levels aren't needed why play them other for the random lolz from getting one-hit by a bandit.

D&D 5E Do you play without Critical Hits?

I try to build fair and play to win as a DM but level one especially is susceptible to just flat out bad luck and the lack of player options to mitigate those moments. IMO that isn't fair. Best bet is just jump into the game at lv 3 or 5. First encounter of my first 5e game ended up with 3...

D&D 5E Do you play without Critical Hits?

Pretty much. I only use lv1-2 for brand new players and getting knocked out during the very first encounter ever played is not exactly a positive experience.

D&D 5E Do you play without Critical Hits?

My players have critical damage immunity at lv 1 and 2. I still announce them just role normally. I don't know if that counts.

    D&D 5E Monks Suck

Personally I believe the problem with the monk is based on the I think you hit close to the heart of the issue. The Monk's niche is on demand flexibility which is just not a high priority in the minds of most players. There is a big push for specialization and role fulfillment which leaves the...

    D&D 5E Monks Suck

The only real issue with the monk is a crappy capstone but not like they are alone there.

D&D 5E Twice the monsters with minimum hitpoints to counter GWM/SS?

If a few points of damage is shifting encounters into the unchallenging and trivial category then the issue is on the DM's side not the players'. Increasing anything in response to the players' feat selection amounts to treadmill progression. You are better off not using those feats or just...

D&D 5E Sling Stones as Magic Items

In a a game I had a player craft sticky sling stones. They didn't do anything past being annoying.

    D&D 5E Defensive Duelist fix?

That is a valid complaint/concern but it's the nature of 5e. Magic takes up the majority of the mechanical and narrative space. you really have to approach the game with the assumption that all classes are inherently magical and just channel it in different ways. There are a few ways you can...

    D&D 5E Defensive Duelist fix?

You get 2 extra feats. Take ritual caster instead of PaM or MI instead of GWM.

    D&D 5E Defensive Duelist fix?

Agreed. Optimizing for damage is rarely, if ever, worth the opportunity cost(s).
