I completely agree. Don’t ram dogma down someone’s throat during their first one shot. If they ask, I tell them where Illithid come from. If it’s a campaign, only include the lore necessary. I believe knowing the lore allows the party to tell a richer and more meaningful story.

I need a tome so large it’s steel reinforced so as not to sag. I want a book so massive I can drive fence posts with it

I spun up a discord server a few weeks ago with the express purpose or teaching lore and how to make the game more immersive as well as exploring the various mediums through which we now play D&D. Want in?

I can sum Forgotten Realms pretty well: No one trusts anyone. A maligned god attempted to conquer the land but faltered and spread his seed everywhere. One of them met up with Jahira, Minsc, Boo, and Imoen (the other guy dies). Jahira is a Harper. Minsc is deeply broken and his hamster is of...

Mad slowly turns towards Mallus. He raises a hand, jaw opening unnaturally wide as he screams “Not one of us!!!”

Lots of Forgotten Realms material in DMsGuild and beyond.

They should be and with some settings/modules they are. And regarding others, like Minsc & Boo’s Journal of Villainy, WotC has missed a step.

Be passionate, not belligerent. No post I’ve read declares any one group the majority and all power to them. Even if you are on the losing end. Love what you love. Find people who enjoy thay lore like you do. I immensely enjoy lore and don’t see @Oofta as championing one way over another.

I can see where you’re coming from. Try picking out some of your favorite monsters and see where they started as opposed to now. Covering something like the history of the Harpers and the escapades of Minsc and Boo is daunting especially if you’re not invested. Pick something you’re intrigued...

Behold the endless possibilities and portability that ARcana brings to D&D. Shenanigans you say? I’d agree if I wasn’t a Dungeon Master for one Mirrorscape’s 2 server games and soon to participate in the beta. Look for ARcana this winter.

What criteria does a edition need to meet to be gold in your eyes? (That reads belligerently. Apologies, I’m not being combative, just very curious)

In which case I stand corrected. Of what lore do you speak? Spelljammer material? Like Large Luigi serving drinks in the Laughing Beholder on the Rock of Bral? (So psyched to have him in a campaign)

On the other hand we loose interesting back story. Like how Kenku were curse to be wingless by Grazz’t. Additionally, beholders lack the motivation they once had as they’re no longer the raging xenophobes they once were (yes I realize someone can read into that and see parallels with Nazis...
