D&D (2024) Can we have a discussion about the assumptions we make in terms of balance?

I'm saying that the class is weak, not that it isn't popular.

D&D (2024) Can we have a discussion about the assumptions we make in terms of balance?

So let's ignore social stuff entirely and just toss that down the garbage chute it no longer belongs here gone forever. Imagine trying to climb over an obstacle with athletics, or just use: Dimension Door, Misty Step, Fly, Spider Climb Imagine trying to cross a pit or ravine trying to get a...

D&D (2024) Can we have a discussion about the assumptions we make in terms of balance?

This is absurd. Casters and non casters are both classes. All classes can be compared. Anything else is not balance. It is something distinctly different.

D&D (2024) What should be ability score cap for standard PCs?

But what does that give you conceptually? Mechanically the difference between 18 and 20 is basically 0. It doesn't make sense to declare these "superhuman" when all that does is attach a label to it that says "superhuman" while not actually having mechanics to reflect the fact that these...

D&D General Should NPCs be built using the same rules as PCs?

I think the danger with a symmetric design is that you can run into what happened with D&D 3.0, 3.5 and PF1, where every statblock was a list of feats and you had to know all the feats to use the stat blocks. I absolutely hated this with stuff like Power Attack... Having to do note manually in...

    D&D 5E [+] Ways to fix the caster / non-caster gap

I mean on the subject of realism I think a bunch of level 20 rogues could kill a diplodocus with just daggers. I'm 100% fine with that.

    D&D 5E [+] Ways to fix the caster / non-caster gap

I'm not saying "because (only)dragons". I'm saying because: A character can reliably survive extreme falls repeatedly, no chance of death whatsoever. No broken bones. Nothing. A walk in lava causes no permanent damage. Giants, oozes, all the weird and impossible monsters. Some creatures are...

    D&D 5E [+] Ways to fix the caster / non-caster gap

Mmmm but he was asserting universal realism. Sure it's possible he's playing without magic and without monsters in some custom homebrew thing but I don't think that's very likely.

    D&D 5E [+] Ways to fix the caster / non-caster gap

I hate to bring it up but dragons and wizards makes it not real life and not attempting to be like at all.

D&D (2024) What should be ability score cap for standard PCs?

I kinda dislike ability scores in D&D because they are, well, quite weird. The system expects you to interact with the world through other features that "manifest" these abstract scores into useful things, but a lot of characters won't have these abilities for a lot of scores. Your intelligence...

D&D 5E The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

Protecting other characters is fun, but a lot of people are hostile to such design. I made a suggestion that it is possible to design a non-magical taunt ability that forces enemies to attack you and it spawned, I dunno, twenty pages of somewhat heated discussion.

D&D 5E I think Wizards balances classes using damage on a single target nova over 3 rounds.

My optimal solution is that all martial classes are buffed, but I'd take a mythic martial as a consolation prize.

D&D 5E I think Wizards balances classes using damage on a single target nova over 3 rounds.

Yes. I'm not objecting to the existance of such a martial because to me it sounds awesome.

D&D 5E I think Wizards balances classes using damage on a single target nova over 3 rounds.

But a fighter that is properly balanced against the wizard is pretty much improved by definition. It's impossible to make a fighter-similar class that is as powerful as a wizard that is not more powerful than the fighter.

    D&D 5E [+] Ways to fix the caster / non-caster gap

I love One Piece, but it has a unique and deliberately over the top aesthetic. But I think that to a degree, it is not like D&D isn't over the top at high levels either. Wizards are absolutely bonkers at that point while fighters mostly still faff about poking at things with sticks.

    D&D 5E [+] Ways to fix the caster / non-caster gap

Zoro from One Piece: He can slice any material. It's an understatement to say that he's powerful. Shanks from One Piece: His presence is so powerful that people nearby fall unconscious. Mihawk from One Piece: Can destroy a ship. With a sword.

    D&D 5E [+] Ways to fix the caster / non-caster gap

Berserk: Guts could solo Schierke (she's basically a wizard), heck he could probably beat his entire party if they ganged up on him (which also has an apprentice wizard in it). The thing with manga is that it tends to screw up your basic premise: Each manga tends to establish a power-system and...

Absolutely this. I don't understand why there needs to be symmetry between player options and monster options.

D&D General The Crab Bucket Fallacy

The mistake a lot of people make in 5E is that they notice that there are few possible steps of improvement of ability scores (can't go above +5 mod normally) and assume that means that ability scores are more valuable, and they equate it having value with it being impactful. Look at PF2 for a...

D&D General The Crab Bucket Fallacy

I'm not discounting what they want, though. 1: We could buff the fighter, which cannot possibly dissatisfy these players 2: We could nerf the wizards, which cannot possibly dissatisfy these players (since they're not playing a wizard, after all) 3: We could add a new martial class balanced...
