QuestWorlds is coming—who else is hyped?

I'd say a number of things: Cleaned-up Contest Mechanic. With the old game it could sometimes be difficult to assess the degree of success or failure of a contest, particularly with edge cases. There were occasions I had to stop play to check the matrix in the book. The new system just counts...

QuestWorlds is coming—who else is hyped?

I hope Chaosium doesn't mind if I quote direct from the book: To my mind that makes the new QW the fourth edition of the system.

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

Agreed. A lot of this is in the execution. I think the key point for me is that I reject the OP's assertion that simple is less consistent, and any assumption that it's qualitatively inferior. My years of experience in both wargaming and roleplay says otherwise. I've personally found many...

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

Yes. And yet 'simulation' was too often defined in terms of complexity, and process. Ignoring that the simpler games often boiled away the excess and fat to get to get us a rich and tasty sauce. I still remember the shock of playing Ben Knight's 1991 Jutland game in Command magazine, or the...

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

I'll just add that in the wargaming circles I belonged to, the whole 'complexity = quality' argument was litigated intensively for decades, right back to the era when flame wars were fought in issues of 1980s Xeroxed fanzines. It's interesting that a lot of the veterans of those bustups - all...

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

This does not compute for me. Outcomes for a light system aren't any less real than outcomes for a crunchy system. This appears to be an assertion that more detail and process is somehow more concrete than less. It's assigning a qualitative value to crunch. Or, to inject the title of a VERY old...

I never said you did. My first post was a response to the OP. And to a large extent so was my second.

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

Well, I found 'Less rules = less consistency' to be highly disagreeable too. That said, I've found, from lived experience, that removing the shackles of rules from the players can be liberating. I've seen recognition dawn on players' faces that they can do so much more than rules sets allow...

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

Rules light systems means players and their imaginations are unbounded by the rules. Rules heavy systems confine the players and restrict not only what they can do, but confine their imaginations to a narrow list of options.

QuestWorlds is coming—who else is hyped?

I feel that something that will trip up a lot of GMs is the low frequency of rolling. The Platonic ideal of QW is to roll only at key moments where the story might diverge in a substantive way. However, that's difficult if you've trained yourself (or been trained by other GMs) to have players...

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

This appears to be very much a problem for games that lean more towards wargaming than storytelling.

QuestWorlds is coming—who else is hyped?

Someone upthread described it as a 'more flexible FATE', and I'd cheerfully go along with that. Mechanically it's lighter than FATE, and really focused on rolling only when you need a story obstacle to be overcome. The core mechanic for resolving obstacles is a straightforward D20 system where...

QuestWorlds is coming—who else is hyped?

The new QuestWorlds is 'setting agnostic' and encourages the creation of 'genre packs' - or world settings for QW. To this end, I hope people don't mind me briefly plugging my own QuestWorlds genre pack, Spec-ops Magica Crisis. This is an anime-themed world setting in which you play high-school...
