TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

I think many STs run it that way, but it's still a supervillain rpg to me (rather than horror).

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

None, and I stated why in my previous post (GMs lacking the skill to produce true horror). Weird that you brought up Vampire and Werewolf though: I've always saw those as "dark superhero" games where the PCs struggle to avoid being consumed by their own power. The tropes normally associated with...

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

Horror. 100% of GMs I've played with or seen run the genre do it like a mystery. Horror and mystery can combine like most genre do but horror and mystery are actually two different genres with different tropes. If I'm playing in a horror ttrpg I expect my PC to be terrified at points because...

    Sword & Sorcery or Bust

Hi EnWorlders 🤓 Longtime lurker, first-time poster: I'm about to run a low-level Sword & Sorcery-themed campaign set in the Forgotten Realms for a group of experienced ttrpg players. I require thine good counsel on these matters: I'm down to two systems: Barbarians of Lemuria OR Shadowdark...

Mode Genres, Setting genres, and how we make "Games"

With SW's Horror Companion? https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/448302/swade-horror-companion I run action-adventure. Period. I like recreating the wild action of films like Star Wars and LotR and comic books. Good old pulpy "punch evil in the face" action. Everything else is boring...

D&D General I wish people would avoid name-dropping Gary Gygax

The Dave Arneson who we know made Blackmoor from his houserules of Gygax's Chainmail?

D&D General I wish people would avoid name-dropping Gary Gygax

That's the thing: I'm not trying to make an argument or be "clever". And if I want to quote the late Gary Gygax until my last breath, I will - and there's nothing you people can do about it. He created and produced Dungeons & Dragons, and there's nothing you can do about it. Except complain...

D&D General I wish people would avoid name-dropping Gary Gygax

Except, Gygax wasn't an authority. Authority grants the ability to give orders and enforce obedience. He was a tabletop game designer ;)

    Settings (High Fantasy). Help Wanted

Congrats on starting your first campaign 🤓 Regarding your questions: AD&D's Forgotten Realms is one of my favs Creating your own setting can be very fulfilling, especially when you turn the players loose in it. https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page http://hyboria.xoth.net/

WotC What 2024 rules would you take with you into a prospective 2014 5E Retroclone?

5e isn't OSR. Doesn't fit the playstyle: Rulings not rules Player skill not character abilities Heroic not superhero Forget "Game Balance"

D&D General I wish people would avoid name-dropping Gary Gygax

What's weird is people falling into a sad coma over Gygax even being mentioned ... on a site that features discussion of tabletop rpgs.

D&D General Dealing with bad luck (From behind the DM screen).

That's a huge part of PCs getting diffed in combat: many players (not all) refuse to run away no matter how bad things get. Largely because they lack the tactical expertise to perform meaningful risk assessment. They have that 'Spray-N-Pray' video game mentality and unless the GM is fudging like...

D&D General Dealing with bad luck (From behind the DM screen).

I cannot thoroughly express my envy of your successes. Soon, the party will be decimated and victory firmly in hand. JUST KIDDING. Can I share a line from E.G.G.? "But lo', every time you throw the "monster die" a wondering nasty is indicated, and the party's strength is spent trying to...

Checking the Geology of a Map

Great map @SpaceOtter 🤓 What's weird to me is a GM sharing the big map with players. Guess I'm old-school: the party starts in a hex and explores, with one player/PC mapping the terrain as they go. To me it brings a greater sense of discovery to the table. Wonder.

    D&D 2E Huh. AD&D 2e is my favorite D&D

Yeah. I really liked the "Compleat/Complete" series, especially The Complete Fighter's Handbook and The Complete Book of Elves.
