    GMs: When Is Enough Enough?

I don't know. I think sometimes you can prep everything perfect but, you never really know how a game plays until you actually play it. I always wanted to run Delta Green (the newest edition) but when I got a chance SHEESH what a trash boring system that was. Now it was the opposite with...

    GMs: When Is Enough Enough?

See you've had a pretty good road as a GM: playing what you like with active players. You've never ran into a problem that caused you to rethink the system or setting and that's great (y) Been there so many times. I sucked when I had to stop, but it's also a relief because usually my dislike...

D&D General The joys of playing a PC with low stats

I don't mind random rolls that much as long as I have a chance of creating a competent character. That's the issue - competency. A character can be unique and flawed and still competent, if the system allows for it.

D&D General The joys of playing a PC with low stats

That's fine. I can remember having D&D PCs that sucked so hard that playing them was just a countdown until they died a merciful death. I like GURPS and HERO, where I can make a proficient character with flaws (that I pick) that impact the adventure. Far better than being at the mercy of dice...

D&D General The joys of playing a PC with low stats

Sure you did. Plenty of us did. Who cares? Doesn't mean those were the best characters to have. Having a flawed character and having lousy scores 'aint the same thing, either (y)

D&D General The joys of playing a PC with low stats

This 100% IMO Having the best scores you can get is important, even if they only translate to low bonuses. Better than low scores and clownshoes characters who IME tend to become liabilities to the party. Just because I might enjoy playing D&D for the lulz doesn't mean the rest of the...

    GMs: When Is Enough Enough?

That's a good waypoint. Too long for me, but six sessions would probably be ideal for most groups. For me, after the first combat is done I know what I need to know. But. I'm impatient (a universally bad trait) and if something "feels off" for me at the table, it's a big distraction. Wish I had...

D&D General The joys of playing a PC with low stats

There's at least a hundred different ways to create unique characters outside of the TPK magnet of "3d6 in order" :sneaky:

    Blood or Spaghetti Sauce?

Hi TTRPGers! So I have a confession to make: I like a little gore in my gaming. Even if it's D&D or something rules-lite (e.g. Barbarians of Lemuria or Freeform Universal), I like when the violence gets a little lively. Especially when an attack takes those last few points of life ... IMO...

    GMs: When Is Enough Enough?

This is shocker for the Gamemasters out there, so players can take 15. What do you do when you're running an adventure or you're early into a campaign and realize you are NOT feeling the game system? Some rule or collection of rules is triggering your "NO FUN" sensor. Or maybe the setting...

What Does a "Successful" RPG Look Like?

Has there even been a consensus here on what "successful" means? All I see is the usual confusion

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

What I really enjoyed about reading Dragon back in the day was how Gygax, Kask and others would respond to the letters from gamers. You just don't see that kind of product support much anymore ;)

    Minimalist and One Page RPGs

I'd define "Minimalist TTRPGs" as the quintessential "Beer & Pretzels" games. Not bad, but definitely not for serious, long-term campaigns IMO.

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Based on threads posted on EN World's D&D sub-forum, it's clear many people are confused by the most recent ruleset. Ultimately, we play what we play because we enjoy the overall experience(y)

What Does a "Successful" RPG Look Like?

IME business success is always going to be measured by sales and profits. Paizo actually topped WotC by making Pathfinder the #1 selling ttrpg in spring 2011, fall 2012, spring 2013, fall 2013, and summer 2014. So beating D&D is anything but impossible. You just have to make a game people want...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I'll go ahead and make the distinction you're trying to make - that compared to WotC's versions of D&D, the TSR-era Thieves were bad. It's an important distinction because WotC changed a great deal about the game, so much so that Gary Gygax said WotC's game was no longer even D&D. I'll further...

    Minimalist and One Page RPGs

How would you define a "Minimalist ttrpg"? I'm a fan of RISUS, The Anything RPG - but it's like 4-5 pages.

What Does a "Successful" RPG Look Like?

The OP didn't provide a definition for success, so using my own definition, D&D is the only truly successful ttrpg. You don't have to agree, but I answered an incomplete question to the best of my ability (y) Wotc indeed does sell D&D pdfs on DrivethruRPG...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

TSR Thieves are bad to some people. There's been people in this thread who've posted their enjoyment of playing the class. This idea that they were objectively bad doesn't pass the sniff test, especially when you consider that once the Magic-User ran out of spells, that class was a liability to...
