Yeah the issue here is that damage was never really the issue. Even in 3.5 it wasn't the issue (although the fact that you needed optimisation knowledge to get that damage at high levels 3.5 was). There's a big versatility gap between casters and martials. I found in the last thread that came...

D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

If I knew the DM fudged rolls and my character got killed by a Critical Hit from an Orc I would be asking the DM why he didn't fudge that one. If you fudge you're not really rolling you're deciding. If the players know you're fudging then they know you're deciding.

The problem that always come up with this is how does it become possible? It's one thing to make it become possible by the rules, but what does it mean for it to become possible in the setting? Casters can do extraordinary things because they have magic (in fact we have a whole collection of...

Dragonlance DRAGONLANCE LIVES! Unearthed Arcana Explores Heroes of Krynn!

The problem is that not everything should go into the subclass box, it's ok to have more than one major choice in a character's career.

D&D 5E Player angry about enemies climbing rope with Rope Trick

If Predators can't escape with their meal it's probably because they would never have been dumb enough try for it given the odds Have the predator follow the party and wait until they are separated for some reason before they attack. Or have them attack the archer pinging away at the back in...

D&D 5E Player angry about enemies climbing rope with Rope Trick

I don't see why people are so concerned about realistic behaviour. We're talking about a purely game artifact - it's so abstract and open to interpretation any response could be plausible. The point of Death Saves is to give PCs a pretty good chance of survival. If you don't want that reduce...

D&D 5E Player angry about enemies climbing rope with Rope Trick

You obviously can challenge players. You just keep raising the difficulty of encounters until you find the breakpoint. Sooner or later you will get dead PCs. That part's not difficult. I feel that there is a problem here, but the way it's being stated obviously doesn't really get at the...

That was my first thought about how to handle the situation when I read the OP.

D&D General Armour class and essentialism

Isn't this the same thing? If we're reskinning and refluffling why wouldn't you be choosing a Paragon Path purely for it's mechanics? The mechanics are the part you have to live with.

D&D General Armour class and essentialism

Yeah. It does tend to be weird. I remember reaching that point in 4e with paragon paths. We were encouraged to refluff them if the fluff didn't match - but then what if the fluff of one does match but it's just mechanically weaker (or you just don't like the particular mechnical representation)?

Sorry dude. This was settled long ago. That the 3.5 cleric was overpowered is really not up for debate at this point.

The desire to even out the balance of classes is what got us Codzilla.

And Rogues even moreso than any of the others. Poor Rogues. The 5e rogue really emphasises to me how people read the problem with sneak attack in 3.5 wrong. The issue was not that the rogue sometimes couldn't use sneak attack because some monsters were immune to it, or they couldn't get into...

Stopping caster from learning more high level spells seems a bit drastic to me. I would simply not play at those levels. If the higher level spells are the issue you could simply delay the progression to give you more time before you get there. Something else to consider, which doesn't really...

D&D 5E Sage Advice is back!

My experience is really the biggest issues a lot of GMs have is just being very bad at communicating what they actually want. This is, in many ways understandable, because people have very different frames of reference. One GM may advertise a game "No Tieflings and Dragonborn". He may be...

D&D 5E Sage Advice is back!

Isn't it in the PHB? Some races are common, some are uncommon and some aren't even in the the PHB, which by implication definitely doesn't make them common. I think people tend to oversell this issue. Reading too many threads on a place like this can distort your perpsective on where people...

D&D 5E Sage Advice is back!

One of the things that's stood out to me is the tendency of subclasses to increasingly give out the same spells. Disguise Self and Misty Step being the two biggest offenders that have lept out to me. I think there are now two different Ranger subclasses that give out Disguise Self.
