Is basic melee damage + Strength? Because then I could see it making sense as that is what a regular unarmed strike is. Otherwise, I'll likely houserule it to just be with strength or flat proficiency bonus.

May be the odd man out here, but I find the wonkiness to be a feature, not a bug. I would tweak it if it were mine, but the insanity of it makes it feel like a categorization magic that was formed by thousands of different wizards over thousands of years.

I don't think any answer they give is going to appease you. They gave you the reasoning. You can either accept it, or assuming you buy it, house rule it away. It's not the end of the world and for the most part, everyone who has seen it understands it.

If the playtest is any indication, certain classes can only pull from certain traditions for their maneuvers. Fighters have no such limitation and have extra exertion like the Adept does. They also get their own unique social features as well, like Steely Mien.

My problem stems from the fact that there's nothing that stops you from being a wizard with 8 int at level 1. But you somehow can be too dumb to stop being a wizard? Also, by putting those requirements, you're only stopping people from playing sub-parly, which I never felt was on the designers...

Well, every martial class is getting combat maneuvers. So, they all will be getting a power up to some degree.

Can't speak for your experience, but all of my times running for and playing as a monk have shown it to be a great class that's been a joy to play.
