Pathfinder 1E Anyone using Trailblazer with Pathfinder?

Your thoughts on it certainly were not obvious to me until you pointed them out. I really like your ideas. I think I have settled on trying the following: - 10 minute resting with XP penalty if they rest more frequently then every 3rd encounter. - Combat reactions - Solo and elite monster...

    Hero Points?

I've been using them in my game and the players have been spending them fairly liberally. I award them 1 HP when they level and will award another for story milestones. Occasionally I'll award them for particularly brilliant play or RP. I'd say on average the players spend 1 HP per 8 hour...

Pathfinder 1E Anyone using Trailblazer with Pathfinder?

I would think that casters hanging back would use dodge or block every turn as it is unlikely they would need to save an AoO. Does that cause any issues? Obviously they wouldn't get as many reactions with their low BaB, but they would still get at least one to try and fend off the archer...

Pathfinder 1E Anyone using Trailblazer with Pathfinder?

I was wondering about that. Does it help close the power gap between fighter types and casters at mid to high levels? Combat reactions sound like a lot of fun, but I could see them taking a lot of time (since monsters would get to use them too) and definitely favor those who are in melee range...

Pathfinder 1E Anyone using Trailblazer with Pathfinder?

As I've thought more on the changes, I am also leaning away from the combat reactions unless I am DMing a small (3-4) group of players. Any more than that and the reactions would end up making combat more complex and take longer than it already does. Cancelling out any benefit of more engaging...

I know it was only one session but were they well received?

Pathfinder 1E Anyone using Trailblazer with Pathfinder?

That is a really great idea! I like having the party decide how much to press on, weighing risk verses reward. Consider your idea adopted, if you don't mind? :) I do something similar, albeit much smaller scale, with NPCs in the group. The PCs decide if the NPC is going to fight with them and...

Pathfinder 1E Anyone using Trailblazer with Pathfinder?

This topic is a branch off the thread on making Pathfinder a bit more like 4E with house rules, streamlining iterative attacks, etc. I picked up Trailblazer based on that thread and am digesting it now. I like a lot of what I see, and I can see how some of those concepts made it into Pathfinder...

D&D 4E What do you think of the delve format used in 4E adventures?

I like having the very detailed delve format for set piece encounters, or encounters that have interesting tactical/dynamic terrain (my favorite!). But for mundane encounters it is way too much unneeded detail. I really don't need help to setup a toe to toe fight, thanks. I'd rather have the...

    Adventure Path suggestions

Personally I think the APs still require some preparation time. I am currently running Serpent's Skull and spend maybe 2 hours prep for an 8 hour session. Prep includes modifying the encounters as my group has 7 players, putting monsters into Hero Lab, pre-printing battle maps, etc. I also...

    Adventure Path suggestions

First, I am fairly new to the APs. I have Legacy of Fire, Kingmaker and Serpent's Skull. What I have seen consistently in all of them is lots of opportunity for RP and interesting NPCs. Some APs are more combat heavy perhaps (with more dungeon/wilderness exploring and the like) but I've been...

    That looks perfect! Thanks!!

    D&D 4E Looking for a 4E (essentials) meat grinder!

I would like to GM an online, Essentials only (as those are the only books I have) dungeon crawl that is terrifyingly difficult and deadly. I would love something that captured the old school (1E) feel of traps and puzzles, getting sometimes confronted with monsters over the PC's heads and...

    D&D 4E Reconsidering Pathfinder over 4E

I also like many things in 4E, but due to pretty closed minded groups I don't get much of a chance to play it. So I was faced with the choice of 3.5 or Pathfinder. The things I liked and hated in 3.5 are still there in Pathfinder, though Pathfinder lessened some of the pain points a bit...

    Computer Assisted Monster Generation

I have used Herolab for creating new monsters, but I'm not sure that would fit the bill for you. You can build off existing SRD creatures so that simplifies it somewhat. For more unique creatures they have a pretty extensive editor that while it takes a bit to learn is fairly straight forward...

Wandering Monsters - yea or nay?

I agree that improv is good, and there is a time for it. But I think much has to do with the feeling of the game world you are trying to portray, and the story you are trying to tell. Some encounters, like the aforementioned T-Rex could seriously end up changing the feel of the environment and...

Wandering Monsters - yea or nay?

I mostly run Paizo APs which do have WM tables. I will generate random encounters ahead of time so I can toss out ones that make no sense. "What is a Tyrannosaurus doing here?". I can also put structure and a reason behind the encounters that make sense and can propel the story forward, even in...
