D&D General Backstories: good, bad or whatever?

I personally prefer having characters defined only very roughly - a few general traits + connections between characters in the group - at the beginning of the game and their personality and story being shaped through play, but generally I'm fine either way. What is IMO important with...

What is your favorite RPG book of all time?

If we're talking strictly RPG products, then the Shadowrun 2 (or more specifically 2.01D) core rules win because that was the thing that really drew me into RPGs. If we allow RPG-adjacent books, then Peterson's The Elusive Shift because that's the one book I would recommend to everyone who's...

GMs - what is your vetting process for finding new players?

Mostly the same here. The only difference is that I don't exclude long-term campaigns right away. But looking back at the groups I joined in the past few years, just playing a few sessions to see how things go still seems like the better option because it saves the effort of aligning on campaign...

Moria Campaign Module Coming for TOR2e and LotR 5e

That would indeed be great (specifically setting it in Moria). I hope they have something like this on their roadmap.

D&D General D&D's Utter Dominance Is Good or Bad Because...

I think it's good that with 5e there's again a TTRPG that managed to attract enough pop cultural awareness to reach people that previously were either not aware of this sort of games or found them too niche/nerdy. However, I wish that the gap between D&D and other games was not quite as large -...

    D&D General DALL·E 3 does amazing D&D art

The pencil sketch increased my motivation to try out something myself again, so I burnt through my free Bing credits to get some pictures of a pair of (male) dwarven and (female) elven wizard. I was unable to get a normal-sized dwarf and a tall elf, but at least they came out roughly equal in...

    The DUNE RPG

It does (but I cannot tell anything about the contents of those books, since I only got them from this very bundle).

D&D General Forgotten Realms geographic changes.

I took it as being close to a fantasy version of Al-Andalus, blending Southern European, North African and Arabic influences. But in any case, I'd argue that the ambiguity we see in associations here is actually its actually an advantage Calimshan has, since it becomes more of its own thing and...

Jumpgate Is An Overhaul of the Roll20 VTT

The new character sheet builder/SDK looks useful. I never tried my hands on building roll20 stuff, but given I heard a number of people complain, the existing one is probably a bit cumbersome. One thing I was wondering: have they announced anything regarding textured 3D dice (like Foundry's...

Looks pretty good! What prompt did you use to generate this? (and what software/portal)

OSR Kickstarter for Modern Necessities, modern themed rules for Old-School Essentials - 2 hours left!

With 9€ for a PDF, I'm in. Not sure if I will actually use this 1:1, but I'm interested to see how you have tweaked the B/X rules for modern day scenarios.

D&D 5E What are the highlights of D&D 5th edition for you?

I liked early 5e and how, after I had burnt out on 3e after a good decade of play, it reignited my interest in D&D and RPGs in general. The beginning hype of streamed RPG sessions, WotC's events around new books and the simplicity of a new streamlined edition with just three core books - all of...

Why do many people prefer roll-high to roll-under?

I agree with your general assessment, but one option I find more intuitive is to use two thresholds in such cases, i.e. difficulty as the lower bound and skill as the upper bound (e.g. Whitehack does something like this for AC in combat).

Why do many people prefer roll-high to roll-under?

I would agree that comparison is faster in general, but number ranges also matter. At least personally, I feel that addition and comparison are both relatively fast for single digit numbers and a moderate amount of dice (I would place the limit lower for addition than comparison - probably 3 vs...

Why do many people prefer roll-high to roll-under?

Yes, I think that plays a larger role (I would confirm that intuition for myself, too). The other thing is that with role-under systems you limit the scale on which you can roll. That's fine if we are mostly dealing with human or humanoid opposition, but can get a little tricky if you have human...
