D&D 5E How often do your 5e sessions end with a Long Rest for the party?

Rarely for my current group, but the parenthetical doesn't apply. The DM/group doesn't actively avoid ending sessions with long rests. It just happens rarely because we end sessions based on the clock rather than where we are in the adventure.

    D&D (2024) We’ll be merging the One D&D and D&D forums shortly

I can’t believe I’ve read most of it.

What are you reading in 2024?

I finished re-reading One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest -- it's been about 30 years -- after seeing the movie for the first time last month. Passages are brutal, immediate, and visceral. I just started Babel by R.F. Kuang, after the Hugo fiasco drew my attention to it. Only two chapters in. I'm...

D&D 5E Apprentice Wizard- Arcane Burst power

I’m just saying it’s the PC’s problem, if it is a problem. Let the player figure out how they’ll try to solve it.

D&D 5E Apprentice Wizard- Arcane Burst power

But that doesn't mean you have to tell the player that it can't be done, right?

D&D 5E Apprentice Wizard- Arcane Burst power

I accept that NPCs and monsters have ways to model the use of magic and combat skills that are different than the PCs. I embrace the idea that non-player spellcasters have access to spells that PCs don't have access to. Doesn't it get boring to players to always know what spells and abilities...

D&D 5E Apprentice Wizard- Arcane Burst power

The player should be telling the DM what the PC is doing to find out how to learn that spell if they're interested, not asking how it can be accomplished.

    D&D (2024) We’ll be merging the One D&D and D&D forums shortly

"Fifth edition," but not "5e", and not prominently. It's not what people look for when they're browsing the shelves at the game store or the product listings online. But the point is that people are not going to get confused if the revised books are simply branded "D&D." They'll know it's the...

    D&D (2024) We’ll be merging the One D&D and D&D forums shortly

I don't know about that. The people I play with don't say they're playing 5e. They say they're playing D&D. When they browse the game store for a gift for their DM or for a book of adventures to try their hand at running a one-shot for the group, they look for the D&D logo. "5e" isn't even on...

The bookstore cancelled my order. I'm not happy.

D&D General What Are Traps For?

Traps can serve as indicators of what the adventurers are up against, reflecting the sophistication and resources of the enemy. Traps can be alarms or signals to a dungeon’s occupants. Sprung traps are clear indications to patrolling or wandering monsters that intruders are about.

What are you reading in 2024?

I love gut-punch short stories, and this is a genre I'm not more than passingly familiar with. Looking forward to it.

D&D (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

No, but it’s likely someone will share it with me on D&D Beyond, so I’ll take a look. I might adopt some of the updates to classes, esp. monks and rangers.

    Riddles!

In my experience, riddles rarely land well in games. Either people know the answer or they make shot-in-the-dark guesses.

    D&D 5E Dual-classing house rules?

    Deleted. Nevermind.

    D&D 5E Dual-classing house rules?

Agree. It's difficult to predict what combos might be available to clever players armed with a spreadsheet and ambition.

    D&D 5E Dual-classing house rules?

Since the rogue/wizard in this example does not get the Roguish Archetype at 3rd level, what happens at 9th, 13th, and 17th? Do they chose a feature from any archetype they want? Do they need to be consistent throughout the progression, or can they take features from various archetypes?

    D&D 5E Dual-classing house rules?

In the dual-classed example, the character does not gain the rogue's 2nd level Cunning Action (because the character's 2nd level was taken as a wizard), but it does gain the wizard's 6th level Arcane Tradition feature (because the characters 6th level was taken as a wizard).

D&D 5E 5e Players: How often have you been allowed to use 3PP?

I can't respond to the poll because, as a player, I've never asked to use third-party resources. As a DM (in 5e) I've seen only one player ask about a third-party character class (swordmage). I declined that one, not because it was third-party, but because it was unbalanced with other classes.
