    D&D 5E Divine Archetypes

I like simple pantheons, and I love animistic/spirit-based religions. Plenty of cultures don't have discreet deities, or have a mix of deities and spirits that are both important. How about this mix? Air: sky, weather, travel, storms Earth: mountains, fertility, agriculture, earthquakes, the...

Big changes a'coming! Merging the D&D forums

GAH! If I view DDN-only, WotC articles disappear. That means that WotC articles about DDN have to be viewed as WotC, or with everything else. Poopies. :(

    This Week in D&D

I really like that they are going back to the idea that skills add a bonus to any die roll related to that skill area (rather than a fixed skill with an associated ability score). This allows skills to be more free-form, and allows players to have a wider array of skills that might apply to a...

Big changes a'coming! Merging the D&D forums

I'm not confused--I am referring to Morrus noting that traffic on the site has decreased since splitting everything into many sub-forums. I can agree that splitting the forums may be the cause. No problem. My concern is that the idea that doing the reverse (merging the forums) will somehow...

    Unhappy with new forum setup.

What's Tapatalk? Anyway, the tags solution is good for those of us who only want one set of threads. For those that read two or three, clicking a tag is similar to switching forums under the old system. *shrug*

Big changes a'coming! Merging the D&D forums

I'm not a fan. I joined EN World under the separate forums. If the separate forums caused a net reduction of traffic, how will changing the forums increase traffic? Doesn't that mean more people have to use the web site? Can I filter out all the non-DDN threads?

    Optimal number of players?

I prefer three players and a DM. In some editions, especially at low level, each player can use a couple of PCs.

D&D 5E PCs Making Their Own Magic Items

One thing I liked about AD&D style crafting was that it was DM mediated--recipes, formulas, and special ingredients were always needed. If the DM wanted item creation to be easy, alchemy shops simply sold those things. If the DM wanted item creation rare, then characters had to hunt these...

D&D 5E PCs Making Their Own Magic Items

Like AD&D but more clearly explained I kinda liked the AD&D (1e) way of making magic items: 1. Potions and scrolls at mid level, not too complex, but occasionally needing special materials. 2. Charged items like wands and staffs at "name level" or so, requiring some sort of formula, special...

D&D 5E Trail and error item identifying

A little bit of "Gotcha" is fine, a very little bit . . . D&D is a game for me, and the players get to know more information than the PCs. So, if they pick up magic armor or weapons, then I simply tell the player the "plus". If the magic item is simply treasure, a little flavor text and...

D&D 5E Dwarven Stag Party In The Caves of Chaos?

In my playtests, dwarves can't get intoxicated, since they are immune to poison.

Big changes a'coming! Merging the D&D forums

Good luck with this, Morrus. I am concerned about threads being mis-tagged with the wrong game or edition. Also, as others said, it seems that non DDN threads are likely to be pushed down off of page one rather quickly. Morrus, you noted that traffic decreased when forums split. True. There...

D&D 5E October Playtest Packet - Magic Items, Updated XP, Monster Traits

Potion miscibility is still mocked by everyone in my gaming group. What a shameless appeal to grognards and a waste of space and time. I say that as a grognard, myself (D&D player since 1981).

D&D 5E There should be an option for 1 minute rounds.

Again, I'm not worried about the length of a round and the level of abstraction when everyone is engaged in melee. I'm worried about how a system deals with people doing different things--movement, non-combat actions, pursuit, and so on. A system could be made with interrupts and such that deal...

D&D 5E How Magical or Non-Magical Should the Monk Be?

Monks are firmly entrenched in Forgotten Realms, and have been now for over a decade. There are multiple orders, with names, traditions, associated magic items, and so on. The D&D monk is no longer simply an Asian character archetype.

D&D 5E There should be an option for 1 minute rounds.

We have a turn-based game. Unless DDN is going to make a radical change, it will remain that way. For a turn-based game, there needs to be reasonable break-points, based on the ability of combatants to act and react. A minute is fine if everyone is engaged in melee, but not if some fight...

    D&D 5E Given the choice...

Given a choice between psionics and gish, I would choose psionics. The game is going to have some sort of multiclass rules, so maybe they'll get it right for fighter/magic-users.

D&D 5E If an option is presented, it needs to be good enough to take.

If an character build/option/etc makes the character effectively less useful in combat, exploration, or both, it needs to be said.

D&D 5E If an option is presented, it needs to be good enough to take.

The DMG 2 of 4e changed my perspective on skill challenges, and helped me devise much better ones. Published adventures that came later in 4e did a good job with skill challenges, too. I am all for roleplaying, but I don't want D&D to go back to this sort of rp interaction: DM: You manage to...

D&D 5E How Magical or Non-Magical Should the Monk Be?

What about introducing martial arts specialties, like feat-chains or combat styles? It worked nicely in the AD&D Oriental Adventures book. Martial arts of different types (including mystical and non-mystical ones) could be easily overlayed on different characters, even non-martial ones.
