My first DM, Scott, was my Boy Scout troop leader. He ran AD&D 2e during lock-in trips. Though I never ran 2e and 3.0 was just landing in stores, I have a lot of nostalgia for 2e but can’t separate my mind’s eye of D&D from the Lockwood art style in 3e.

I would agree with your number 8 - I find myself wondering if it’s just that, or that the spells are so rote and boring now and mostly combat-oriented, or if it’s just nostalgia for how magic felt in pre-3e.

I ran it for two years before I realized it wasn’t for me, and our group felt the same.

Unfortunately when I ran it, my players coincidentally happened to make a beeline right for where I’d placed Strahd in the castle, so they didn’t even get to explore most of it!

I would imagine you only “have” to do all the monster math correctly if you have a pedantic player second-guessing it (though they shouldn’t really know the specific monster stats anyway), but I’d think for modern players coming from 5e as their first game, they wouldn’t know any better or...

Is it possible to simplify 3e/.5 to a point where it’s easily runnable? I know removing things likely wouldn’t go over well with the folks who love 3e, but if you just want to use it as a chassis…

I have the 5e version - just wondering if it’d be worth backporting to something like Swords & Wizardry, or Shadowdark I suppose if it’d be easier to be 5e-adjacent.

I’m thinking of running Ptolus for my next campaign, but I can’t make up my mind if I should hack 5e to bits or just run it in an OSR system. Has anyone here done that, and was it successful?

I’m not sure about either cover. The default one looks a bit oddly structured in the dragon placement, but the alt cover is like Lisa Frank meets D&D. I’m not sure which one I’d get.

The poll doesn’t reflect the answer as “no”. The difference in darkvision and torches is that torches have a cost. It’s a potential drain on resources; whereas darkvision is only a source. Freebies for all! No restrictions, no pain points, no resource management.
