D&D (2024) The Dragons Video for the 2025 Monster Manual

Doesn't make sense that elves aren't fey when one of their racial abilities is "fey ancestry"...

    D&D (2024) D&D Monster Manual (2025)

I sort of care too - I grew up reading the Forgotten Realms books, and the canon explanation is something that’s existed the whole time. It’s weird to change the lore for the setting that way. The statblock, however, would be fine, and I think it’s at the very least an interesting change.

The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Added to D&D Beyond

I believe this is likely Free League’s 5e LOTR.

If it was theater, where does Crawford post things that say “this is really going to make the players mad!”

I see, however, that Crawford seems to design from this place - rules to protect the players from badwrongfun DMs.

I agree with you. There shouldn’t be any adversary at all. It shouldn’t be player vs DM, and never actually is in my games. That kind of statement from Crawford sets up the DM as a problem. The players act, and the world reacts, as it should. Consequences come from the setting, not the DM.

No, but it speaks to the mindset they (Crawford specifically) have in that the players should have the upper hand over their DM.

Unfortunately, it’s much harder to take things away than to give them. By defaulting to “DM can’t touch this”, any DM that does is fighting an uphill battle. A DM could more easily choose not to take away a cleric’s power and not cause any issues if they choose that it fits their setting.

For what it’s worth, I’ve seen alternate level drain represented as raising the XP threshold to hit the next level, which I prefer as being less clunky and not requiring recalculation.

Its narrative consequences from their deity, not a DM punishing their player. The mechanics follow the narrative. If a character knowingly, continually, goes against their deity’s tenets, then they’re knowingly making a choice that will put them in disfavor. It makes zero sense that a god would...

You see it as stopping their character development. If they were an actual character rather than a set of mechanics, then this only develops their character more.

No, it’s not unplayable. That’s a dramatic take on things. The cleric is still a character to roleplay with and can use their weapons as normal. They just have to roleplay a change to their character, religion, beliefs, deity, etc., based on the choices that they made. That’s player agency.

Same here, at least everything except the bard. That one makes less sense to me.

A deity sanctions their clerics’ actions with the gift of power, and knowledge that the cleric is spreading their message throughout the populace. If the cleric then begins to act counter to that message (particularly strongly and repeatedly), and counter to their deity’s desires, it makes zero...

D&D General What house-rules or techniques do you use to make 5e grittier?

I think I’m going to use a stand and fight mechanic - once a PC has dropped to 0HP, they start making death saves at DC15. They can keep fighting, however, but can only use an action or a bonus action, no reactions, no concentration spells, and move half their speed.
