I think there’s something to be said that most average players would be perfectly fine with the power level and HP of D&D to continue to climb upwards. Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game. Therefore it’s designers’ responsibility to protect players from themselves...

Or even be given modular rules in D&D to play Tales of the Bamboo Toothbrush Knight instead of being pigeonholed into Guardians of the Galaxy every time.

A bad player is one that uses your game sessions as therapy for themselves and their significant other, and as ways to discuss difficult topics they don't want to bring up with each other, or to get other people to weigh in on those topics and take sides.

I don't overall mind D&D's dominance, however, I wish it was significantly more modular in the core rules as was promised instead of relying on miscellaneous 3rd party creators to fill in the blanks (I'd like to minimize the amount of resources I have to parse and read through to run the game...

For me, the wide array of interesting monster abilities were essential to my enjoyment, rather than just attacking multiple times. Have you taken a look at the 3rd party creation Pathwarden? It might give you some ideas.

I have both 2e and 4e but have played neither. Was there anything worth stealing or backporting from 4e into 2e?
