How much should the GM talk during a session?

Well, since they are pretty useful as a DM I get them in bulk.

How much should the GM talk during a session?

My table are very social/roleplaying focused, and it depends more on how chatty the players are with NPCs than anything else. But I try to leave as much room I can to the players while still describing/creating an exciting world, evocative milieus and interesting and living NPCs.

D&D General D&D: One Brand, Multiple Games

For business reasons the menu of D&Ds won't happen. But if WotC offered a 4e with full digital support I would pay good money for a subscription.

What is and isn't Space Opera?

Sorry if this post came out bad, didn't mean to insult anyone. It's just something I've experienced a lot and is very, very tired of. But I try to formulate myself better :)

What is and isn't Space Opera?

Yeah, sorry if that came off a bit harsh. I was more referring to literary snobs who wouldn't lower themselves to read genre fiction etc. And yes, I'm not a big fantasy guy myself. Kind of odd that I enjoy fantasy roleplaying, but as fiction to read it usually bores the socks of me. With...

What is and isn't Space Opera?

I obviously don't agree, but I hope you are being ironic. Many of my best reading experiences comes from books I seriously doubted I would like. I actually pity folks that don't read a book just because of it's advertised genre.

Spelljammer What is Spelljammer, video interview with Chris Perkins

I was one of the sPElLjAmMeR!1! crowd and was looking forward to the book, even if it included the astral plane. But from how Wiz describe it now, I actually think I'll pass on this one. The party in my current campaign is full on spelljamming, which I have based on homebrewing from the old...

What is and isn't Space Opera?

My post was meant as tongue in cheek. Hand on heart, I couldn't care less about what people who don't like science fiction think about science fiction and it's subgenres. Well, almost :) Sci-fi has been looked down upon during most of it's existence as a defined genre, even though it's more...

D&D General What is the purpose of race/heritage?

With the path WotC has taken, I just wish they went all the way. Let race and heritage be all freeform skins, and have a bunch of options for starting features. I.e., you can have darkvision OR flight etc.

    Our Physical Fitness

For 20ish years I used to hit the gym 3-6 times/week. Then 9 years ago I almost died from a crashed aorta valve and had to go through emergency surgery and a long rehab period. I have a mechanical valve now that works like a charm. But after that I only do walking and some free weights at home...

McGuffins, Secrets and Player Defined Solutions

My standard MO in all trad systems is to define the McGuffin(s) and have rough ideas for clues and paths. Then in actual play I adapt to the players actions, whims and fancys, which usually leads to me scraping most of the original clues and paths, and reworking and adapting the McGuffin. But I...

What is and isn't Space Opera?

If one don't like sci-fi, read Peter F Hamiltons Night's Dawn trilogy, and still claim that Space Opera mean particularly bad sci-fi, then one are objectively wrong and have failed at reading fiction ;-)

What is and isn't Space Opera?

Yes, and it's one of the the best transformations from sci-fi to space opera I've read or watched.

    Fantasy "The Boys" for SWADE

Thanks for the reply, I agree with your reasoning. You and your table will have lots of fun with this one!

    Fantasy "The Boys" for SWADE

Just a question - from the above, is Savage Worlds really the best system for this? I personally would prefer something a bit more mechanically and tactically crunchy and involved, just to let the players be more creative in taking on very overwhelming odds. Or the opposite, something very rules...

    D&D 5E Archetypes Still Missing?

Maybe my players are simpletons, but they've hardly moved beyond PHB stuff despite having access to most WotC books. I give them pretty much free hands to reskin stuff like spell effects and such to match their character concept and background though, but they haven't used it much. So I don't...

What is and isn't Space Opera?

Genre mixups is a genre in itself, or at least what spawns many subgenres. But let's not turn too many postmodernist stones, or we'll change the thread subject.

What is and isn't Space Opera?

Unless the presumtive writer is living in a literary vacuum, I am pretty sure that they can and will genre-frame their upcoming story as space opera, or maybe military sci-fi depending on angle. Kind of like the person that want to write a story about a teenage girl that fall in love with a...

What is and isn't Space Opera?

Bickering about exact definitions of genres and subgenres is an incredibly stupid waste of time. But I'll bite :) Imho space opera has to be epic and grandiose in scale, together with some kind of accelerated protagonist character growth, and other definable stuff. But in my own head, I...
