This is one tactic I'm looking forward to using! Unfortunately, my spellbook is missing a few of key spells at the moment, True Strike being one of them. I hope to obtain it by the time I go up another level, whereupon i can take a 7th level of Alienist and get Quicken Spell. :D

EDIT: Thanks for your very helpful advice, I've updated my character above. I'm certainly not adverse to using polymorph - in fact it's something I'd quite like. I will have a look at this if I can. You're absolutely right here; unless we go to Epic, I'd be perfectly happy casting 8th level...

Absolutely right. The only ways to compensate for this when using low level spells are: 1. Use Heighten Spell to bring the caster level up to a higher spell level, then cast into the ring. 2. Use one or more metamagic feats to raise the spell into a higher level slot, then cast into the ring.

Quick question: would it be possible to use a Moment of Prescience spell to avoid the ill-effects of a failed Intelligence check when casting Contact Other Plane? By the RAW, I'm thinking not, since according to the spell description, Moment of Prescience only gives its bonus to opposed ability...

You're fine to take 10. Same goes for all those other "no re-try" situations listed under spellcraft; if you're not in combat or otherwise distracted, take 10 is allowed.

I played in a campaign that used a variant of the 1E rules for magic item destruction. That was pretty cool actually, because it struck what I felt to be the right balance between the fairly harsh 1E rules, and the pretty soft 3.5E approach.
