Pathfinder 1E Hit Point Inflation and Power Creep in Pathfinder

I'm working on a game of my own, and one thing that occurred to me was that a typical housecat is almost a match for a typical 1st-level Commoner. I reasoned that the problem could be solved if we gave all creatures a Hit Point bonus equal to their base Strength score. For example, a housecat...

    OGL 4E question

WoTC is not going to dogpile anyone for using static defenses in an OGL product, as long that mechanic is described in the writer's own words. Those aren't copyrightable game mechanics, and besides, they're more interested in companies that actually violate their copyrights and trademarks. So...

    OGL 4E question

Game mechanics for roleplaying games cannot be copyrighted. As long as you don't violate any of WoTC's trademarks, and write the game in your own words, you could theoretically create a 4e-ish game with or without using the OGL.

    3.5 or what?

Honestly, the arrival of 4e doesn't disturb me a bit. In a few short years, the "Edition Treadmill" will be in full effect, and 4e will be out of print. It'll be replaced by "4e revised", or "4.5", or "5e". Meanwhile, OGL games like Pathfinder will still be running strong. So I'm not worried. :)

Can those that have decided to move forward with 3e/3.5 be left in peace?

You don't like the new edition? Tell me about it!

It was an experience. :) I was actually shocked at how much more cumbersome 4e is than 3e. There's a wide array of different powers running simultaneously, and most of them provide a bonus or a penalty, depending on you being adjacent to the right type of creature. To any who are in doubt, my...

You don't like the new edition? Tell me about it!

I ran the 4e Quick-Start rules in Keep On The Shadowfell , and I didn't like it. I was painfully aware of the mechanics every minute of the game. An account of my experience is written here: http://www.therpgsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10663

    D&D 3E/3.5 3e Made Me Into a Gronard

It IS grognardism NOW. The meaning of words changes over time. Originally, the word referred to Napolean's "Old Guard", then referred to the old wargamers, then referred to the old 1e gamers, and now it's about to refer to the 3e gamers who aren't hip to 4e. You can call it "co-opting the...

    D&D 4E A couple of things that suck about the 4e SRD/OGL

The 4e OGL is irrelevant. Hasbro wants people to forget that the OGL for 3e doesn't exist, but that won't work... You can use the original OGL based on 3e to create a roleplaying game that's mostly-compliant with 4e. They can't copyright game mechanics for rpgs, only the expression of...

OK, we're gettng a little annoyed here!

Fair enough. But I believe a greatly relaxed moderation style is not only easier on the mods, but it's easier on the posters too. Hypothetical question. What if we were allowed to say almost anything on the forums, as long as we didn't stray off topic for too long? What if we were allowed to...

OK, we're gettng a little annoyed here!

I'm not. I say, "let people flame out". And no, I'm not kidding. When message boards are too strictly moderated, it encourages passive-aggressive behavior. ENWorld was the exception to this rule, but I think that's about to change forever. This type of behavior has been happening at RPG.net for...

    No Iterative Attacks in D&D

You guys overcomplicate things. Do this: For every 10 points of Base Attack Bonus, you receive a bonus attack. That's it. Johan, a 10th level fighter with 16 Strength can attack with his sword twice per round at +13 (+3 STR, +10 BAB). At 20th level, he'll have THREE attacks, at +23 (+3 STR...

    HackMaster: The New Edition

Hmmm. Well, I'm curious about the game. I just went to the Kenzerco webstore, and ordered the Hackmaster GM's Guide and Player's Handbook. I've neither read nor played the game, but they had some coupon thingy for free GM Guides, so I just purchased one of each. My understanding is that it's...

Making An Extreme PC Power Imbalance Work

Allow the players the choice of having multiple characters. One player has his mighty 12th level wizard, while another has his four 3rd level goofy rogues for comic relief, and general sneaky thievery. It could work. :)

    Are lessons learned through D&D?

Well, believe it or not, D&D helped me pass a sample MCAS test in the newspaper. There were 20 multiple choice questions (16 of which I got right), and three of those questions were about Charlemagne. The only reason I know even a little about Charlemagne, is because in some old issue of...

    Is the Cleric class broken/unbalanced?

Frankly, if the cleric's title was renamed "crusader", and then they created a separate class called "priest", alot of these discussions might not be happening. The "crusader" (which would be the cleric) would be the holy warriors or militant arm of many religions. You could then have a...
