I voted level 2, I did it many times (total newbie game) and I let them start 1 level, but soon even in the game I let them go to level 2, so they can see how a level change their character .... usually next question is "what do we have to do to go to the 3rd level ?" :D

I always think about characters by themselves, I mean, I never try to compare it to me or anyone else. creating a character is quite long if you want to have a minimum detailed background. once you've got a rough idea , like being a rogue, choose your alignment.... and the setting...
