    Lvling-Up Vs Flat Math

I wrote a whole blog post about the mechanics of the +1 per level in all previous editions of D&D: Heroes Against Darkness: Mechanics of Attack Bonus progression in D&D and Heroes Against Darkness I'm intrigued by the flattening of the maths, but I think that they may have gone too far in the...

    Stacking advantage: doing the math

Nah, it's non-linear, because you only need one success from any of the dice and each has individually a 60% chance. My maths might be a bit wonky, but it seems right.

    Stacking advantage: doing the math

Time to be more helpful. Let's assume that the base success chance is 60%. The chance of one success from 1 dice is: 60% The chance of one success from 2 dice is: 84% The chance of one success from 3 dice is: 93% Something like that for each additional dice.

    Stacking advantage: doing the math

This effectively turns D&D into a dice pool system, with a bunch of other weird maths layered in as well. Seems like a very complicated mix.

    Advantages / Disadvantages

+1, wow that's stingy. I don't get up in the morning for less than +2! In <i>Heroes Against Darkness</i> I give +2 for mounted attacks, and I think that higher ground would be the same.

    Advantages / Disadvantages

Fair enough. I think that in isolation it's a cool mechanic, but in the D&D ruleset, it's redundant and confusing.

    Advantages / Disadvantages

D&D doesn't care about how much you succeed by, it is a totally binary resolution system. My point, as you have demonstrated, is that having the two systems working side-by-side is just going to add confusion to running the game.

    Advantages / Disadvantages

The advantage/disadvantage mechanic is wholly unnecessary. It does make me wonder whether they'll change the name of the system to dd20 now? My problem with the advantage/disadvantage mechanic is that D&D already has a bunch of mechanics for bonuses and penalties to attacks and ability...

    First Impressions?

I was looking forward to this, but after a read-through it looks a bit too regressive for me. My expanded thoughts on the rules: http://heroesagainstdarkness.blogspot.com.au/2012/05/d-next-early-thoughts-and-opinions.html I think they're deliberately avoiding any terminology from 4th Edition...

    Monte on Character Creation

I totally agree with his post. And in addition to the option anxiety of all of the damned choices (which weapon, which build, which feats, which class features, which background, etc), the other problem with all of the 'choices' is that they usually introduce options that are strictly better...

D&D-ish systems that combine old school with modern rules

I (humbly) suggest Heroes Against Darkness, which seems to cover most of what you're after: • IT'S FREE! • It's self-contained (single 230 page PDF) • Simple and modern d20 ruleset • Martial powers and spells go to Level 10 but they never become obsolete, so higher level play is supported •...

The DCC RPG fills the OSR stomach, but there's still a vacant spot to fill.

I (humbly) suggest Heroes Against Darkness, which seems to cover off most of what you're after: • IT'S FREE! • It's self-contained (single 230 page PDF) • Martial powers and spells go to Level 10 but they never become obsolete, so higher level play is supported • Separate race and class •...

D&D 3E/3.5 Do me a favor, check you 3.5 printing number.

Strangely, my normal hardback Player's Handbook says: 'First Printing: July 2003, Special Edition October 2004'

[Heroes Against Darkness] Neo-clone released FREE!

Yes, you can print out the PDF, you can even re-host it at your site (as long as you don't change it and you attribute the game to its author). Here's my version printed out: The player and creature HP are a bit lower than 4E at the start, and a bit higher later on. But in play, the player...

    My Ideal Game System?

My free neo-clone Heroes Against Darkness ticks most of those boxes (I'm not sure if 'In Print' counts or not). Here's the sell: Heroes Against Darkness is a free, fast, flexible, and fully-featured fantasy d20 RPG system. The game is quick to learn and play, while offering progressively...

[Heroes Against Darkness] Neo-clone released FREE!

While we're all gearing up for the public playtest of D&D Next/5th Edition, I wanted to let you know Heroes Against Darkness has released, it's a free d20 fantasy RPG. Heroes Against Darkness pulls from all of the editions and makes a whole new game. It's been described as a neo-clone, 'cos...

Can I be a girl with a big sword?

Yeah. I wouldn't want my daughter looking at that.

Can I be a girl with a big sword?

One of the problems I found with running the game for my daughter was that with only one character and only one baddie at a time, there isn't really any depth to it, and the end result (win or lose) is pretty much down to the dice, rather than decisions (not that I'm expecting deep strategic...
