    Published or homemade adventures?

When I first started (D&D Basic in 1991) I ran some published modules. There have been some great ones: some of the 2E Ravenloft adventures were usually good, ToEE, Dragon Mountain, Dungeon Crawl Classics, 3E Ravenloft hardbound...but I usually get the most enjoyment from crafting my own...

    Homosexuality in the Forgotten Realms

As humorous as this thread has been, I think it says something. When faced with the Realms, one of the richest, largest and storied fantasy settings in any medium, we find time to discuss whether or not homosexuality is prevalent in the setting. I'm not sure what that says, and certainly don't...

    How did you start?

I answered "something else" because I first heard of D&D from persistent advertisements in Marvel and DC comics. An editorial in an issue of "The Shadow" which ran tangential to DC's D&D comic line, as well as a fascination with ads for Forgotten Realms in my favorite comics, lead me to buy my...

    Living Greyhawk Character Question

Thanks for the tips guys, those are great resources. I'm just trying to sort out the regions and human subraces at the moment, this looks to be a pretty cool setting. Thanks again!

    Living Greyhawk Character Question

I'm just getting back into D&D and I'm new to the 3E ruleset. I've worked up a character for Living Greyhawk because I want to play in a tourney at Dragon-Con this September (ATL denizen here) and I wanted some feedback. Is this the proper forum for me to lay out my character and ask for...

    D&D Red Box vs. AD&D 1st vs. AD&D 2nd vs. D&D 3.0 vs. D&D v.3.5

I'm not taking this from an "edition wars" standpoint: I've played 3E and it is all-around a more elegant, fun, intuitive and robust system than those that came before. A lot of the classic gamer syndrome (with which I'm severely afflicted) stems from nostalgia. For me, I still like to run 2E...

Paladins: Which do you hate more - LE or CE?

As I play a paladin, I would go after LE before CE. I believe that planning, organization and institutional corruption create more evil than do random, capricious acts of evil. Of course, this is the way I play a paladin, and is tied up in my personal view of morality, so it comes with a grain...

    Cheating - who cares?

Funny you should mention...in my last D&D session I found out that I was a cheater  I'm totally new to the 3.5 rules system and, for some reason that I can't explain, I was under the impression that my rogue had a +7 to his missle attacks (as opposed to a +5). Rest assured, this was pure...

    Sick of Magic Missile

Bad move, IMO. MM is the basic "bolt of magic stuff" spell that all wizards can fall back on as a simple attack: as someone said, a fighter's long sword (with limited usage). By the time your PC group can really break the spell they should be ready for magic resistance anyway.

What Makes A Horror Campaign Scary?

The best tips have already been covered, but I have a couple from the 2E Ravenloft boxed set that can help set the mood if your players are willing to be scared and are open to the metagame tinkering involved: 1. At the beginning of the session, collect all of the character sheets and don't...

Pay for this, pay for that? ...

I am the guy at the head of the table, and I enjoy myself immensely. I don't need to be paid: I have a job, and role-playing is strictly a hobby for me. It's something fun that I do with my friends to relax and have a good time. I put a lot of work into my campaign because I enjoy the work...

An open "Thank you" to Erik Mona

Word. I don't play 3E, but I still buy Dungeon because it's such a great magazine. I'm a 2E guy who grew up in the 90s. I used to avoid Dungeon because I didn't like the adventures, but I always looked forward to the Dragon issues that focused on DMing tips. Now I have a magazine that is always...

Wizards of the Coasts are overcharging us and "TSR"

I run a 2E campaign in the Forgotten Realms, so I lean on Faiths and Avatars a lot. I've also read a lot of 3E books, so I have a [somewhat] balanced perspective. I think that Faiths and Avaters beats Faiths and Pantheons, but just barely. It really provides more "flavor" for the campaign that...

    Cliffhangers

I'm feelin' that Sponge. When I was a teenager--and was just starting to get my mind out of the dungeon to worry about the storytelling aspects of my role--I read a few articles on DMing that mentioned cliffhangers as good dramatic conventions. I immediately dropped one at the end of a session...

Does anyone know how to pronounce Latin?

dee-oos (emphasis on the first syllable) dee (as in "we"), oos (as in "noose")

Tell me about magic in your world.

Ranger Wickett: your magic is very cool. Tell the barbarian that this is a good thing. It makes me think of my old days playing Mage: The Ascension: highly stylized, and with deep ties to the game world that enhance role-playing. I'm in the process of resurrecting my 2E campaign, the one that...

I want to get rid of all my 2e stuff...

Long time reader, first-time poster. Thanks for having me :D I've been working on reviving my old 2E campaign, and have hunted down numerous books in my quest to complete the library; consequently, I feel like I'm pretty in tune with the market for 2E books. I've bought from four places, and...
