D&D 5E Can a Reach Weapon stop someone attacking you?

Hide/attack repeat is RAW and thus a legit tactic. But hiding is not possible when an enemy can see you. That's also RAW (you are choosing to ignore this fact). The Monty Python video on not being seen is a beautiful illustration of why it doesn't work fictionally.

D&D 5E Can a Reach Weapon stop someone attacking you?

How would having another person standing between you affected his thrusts?

D&D 5E Can a Reach Weapon stop someone attacking you?

I have addressed it with the player who did this, and he has been perfectly accepting of my ruling on the matter for a long time now. He still finds plenty of ways to get his sneak attack in without resorting to the cheese I described. But now, especially at public tables I'm upfront with...

D&D 5E Can a Reach Weapon stop someone attacking you?

AriochQ has asserted that I'm on a "slippery slope" because of how I choose to rule. I assume he would say the same to MIke Mearls. The reason I rule the way I do is because players try to exploit sneak attack. For a rogue, sneak attack and hiding go hand in hand. So letting a rogue dip behind...

D&D 5E Can a Reach Weapon stop someone attacking you?

Here is what Mike Mearls has to say about attempting to hide in 5e: https://mobile.twitter.com/mikemearls/status/511918248774742016

D&D 5E Can a Reach Weapon stop someone attacking you?

I have no problem with trying to hit someone with the butt end of a pole arm from 10'. One on one, no problem. It a powerful feature. The problem comes from the specific situation of trying to do it when there is a creature standing between attacker and target. Now if the attacker and target are...

D&D 5E Can a Reach Weapon stop someone attacking you?

I'm not on a slippery slope friend. I'm not disregarding the rules. I'm reading them correctly and interpreting what they mean to the game. You are interpreting them too, albeit incorrectly. Read page 177 in you players handbook. My players are never going to make the false assumption that they...

D&D 5E Can a Reach Weapon stop someone attacking you?

Yeah, somehow I knew you would argue that too. But it's been well established by now that you can NOT hide when a creature can see you. The way the halfling rule works is you can hide behind your friend before the enemy sees you. It doesn't give you the super power of turning your opponent into...

D&D 5E Can a Reach Weapon stop someone attacking you?

I would also make the assumption that someone who spent time mastering what is possible with a weapon could do just that. But I would not call something that is an unusually hard move and interferes with the use of the weapon a "complex" maneuver. I call it disadvantage or I call it impossible...

D&D 5E Can a Reach Weapon stop someone attacking you?

As for the "stand behind a friend and attack" part of it, I have decided to give disadvantage in my game in some situations, and I never allow the butt end bonus attack when they have an ally between them and their target. Think about trying to swing a pole axe. With your ally in the way, the...

D&D 5E PotA "New Management" scenario - any ideas

Thanks for the detailed reply 77IM. That's just what I was looking for. I especially appreciate the "what I would have done differently" section and the advice on adding in additional NPCs. I think I also need a better map, one that lays out the main building so my players have a visual...

D&D 5E PotA "New Management" scenario - any ideas

Has anyone actually ran this side quest? I don't have a lot of experience running that type of scenario, so I'd be interested in hearing how to do it right and work some exp rewards into it. Unless the PCs get into an un-winnable fight, there isn't really any combat. It's all sleuthing, which...

    D&D 5E Non-combat Myconid Encounter

I LOVE everything about this. It sounds a bit like Autobots and Decepticons. Just need to add "Prime" to "Cubensis" to hammer it home, but the names are perfect for the character of each Myconid. You obviously know your shrooms. It might be cool to add just a touch of hawkishness to Muscaria...

    D&D 5E Non-combat Myconid Encounter

So I've got this idea to design an encounter with Myconids where the PCs interrupt their mind meld, but the sovereign telepathically invites the PCs to join in. It will be a little like that one scene in Avatar. I'm going to include ~20 Myconid Adults and ~30 sprouts in addition to the...

    Effective sorcerer/wizard multiclassing

Maybe rename the thread since you are talking about hombrew rewriting these classes, not multiclassing them as written.
