    Attempting to change spellcasting

Just a few stray thoughts: 1. I really don't like the idea of the spells causing hit point damage to the caster, but if you want to do that, at least make it non-lethal damage. Otherwise, you're just soaking up the cleric's cure spells - and gets kind of silly when the cleric is casting cures...

Where are the good gamer sci-fi novels?

Very good space opera, especially for those of us who still remember Starfire fondly. An outstanding sci-fi writer is Timothy Zahn. He's written hard sci-fi, sci-fantasy (aka Star Wars), and his Blackcollar books inspired an entire roleplaying campaign for my group.

    DollHouse #! Ghost Season 1/2009

While I agree that there are better actresses out there, Joss Whedon's track record is simply too good. He'll get the most out of Dushku, while surrounding her with outstanding talent and good scripts. I'm not prepared to write this one off yet.

If Everyone Loves Generic, Why Aren't Catalyst Books #1?

Another element to consider is consumer practice. While I have no data to prove this, I suspect most people who play a particular game system first look for supplements for that system, and only afterwards look at other material. Not because of considerations about stats and such, but because...

Top Ten Reasons AD&D Is Fun

This is an interesting point. One of the strengths of 3E is the (mostly) unified mechanics used for the various elements. One of its weaknesses, however, is the extreme degree to which everything is integrated. There are advantages to having a simpler base of rules, onto which players can layer...

    World War I wargames

It's been many years since I had a gaming group that enjoys traditional wargames, but here are three I played in younger years. Guns of August An Avalon Hill game, very standard design, not terribly innovative. We played it a few times, but the gameplay was rather boring, and it doesn't seem...

Maxtor External USB Hard Drive No Longer Recognized

First off, Maxtor external drives have serious quality problems - this has been going on for quite some time. Wish I'd known before I bought mine a couple years ago...:( I had this problem about a year ago. IIRC, it was not a driver issue, though that's what the error message implied. After...

    BattleTech

MC2 is my favorite Battletech computer game - I still have it on my computer and replay the Carver V campaign from time to time. Are you saying that they released the code? If so, do you know if anyone is actively working on modding the game, or even just creating some new scenarios? BTW...

    BattleTech

In my defense, my version of the game is from 1985, before they used BV (battle value?) There were component cost charts, but we never used them in balancing forces. I wonder - do the current BV values really work, even mech to mech? In other words, if you design an effective mech, will the BV...

    BattleTech

True enough, but this is a game, not real life. Players should not make sub-optimal choices for the sake of pseudo-realism. If the designers want to add in such factors, they need to do so in a way that makes the choice meaningful to the player. Silent Death did this very well, in my opinion...

    Non-Gunpowder Explosives in Fantasy

This raises an interesting point - is it easier to obtain the stuff from its source, or to steal it? If it's too difficult to get from the source, anyone known to have the stuff will have to worry about thieves - especially non-magical ones. Having the substance could be more trouble than it's...

Goodman Games to publish a 4e print magazine under the GSL

How about a trade? WOTC can advertise in it - right after they release the revised GSL we've been waiting months for... :)

    Blacks in Comic Books?

I remember there were some Green Lantern issues from the 70's where Hal Jordan was training a black guy to be a backup Green Lantern, or some such. The stories weren't very good, and I don't know if they kept the character around.

    Non-Gunpowder Explosives in Fantasy

I really like this idea. It's a natural development in any world with magic - those lacking in magic would attempt to create countermeasures. However, keep in mind a few considerations before introducing this. 1. How rare is this substance? If it's too common and inexpensive, everyone will have...

    King's Bounty: The Legend

Thanks to this thread, I picked up the game and it's incredibly addictive. There are some good mods - I recommend the Russian mod if you don't want to constantly travel back to town to replenish your army, and the Interface mod is outstanding. Modding the basic data files is fairly easy. I...

    Drakensang [PC RPG]

FYI, there is an English language demo available. It's 500MB and contains most (all?) the first level of the full game.

What Will Influence the Next Generation to Play D&D?

Actually, I don't think "we all" agree at all what the future of the hobby should look like, but I'd like to ask a more basic question - should D&D be part of the future? Bear with me - I'm not trolling. D&D exploded on the scene at just the right time, in just the right way, to reach a...

    D&D 1E Favorite 1E House Rule?

It's been quite a while, but a few I still remember: 1. Spell points. Wizards were still limited to their known spells, but they didn't have to memorize. Ditto with clerics, minus the whole "known spells" issue. 2. Rounds by segments. I believe this came from an issue of Dragon. Basically...

What was your favorite 1e/2e magic item?

Staff of the Magi...yep, that was always fun. Do I absorb that incoming spell or not? Oops... Gauntles of Ogre Power + Belt of Storm Giant Strength + Hammer of the Thunderbolts...instant giant killer. But my all-time favorite? Portable Hole. We would just stuff everything in there, and sort it...
