"Tabletop D&D Has Lost Its Way" Says Pathfinder Video Game Exec

I don't know of anything that works exactly like D&D-style hit points. I've seen discussion from wargaming journals of the 1960s and early 1970s where figure casualties would be rolled for to see what actually removed them from the field, with various options including wounds that would take...

"Tabletop D&D Has Lost Its Way" Says Pathfinder Video Game Exec

Campaign systems in wargames usually have some sort of mechanism to replace losses in units of troops, but the likely source of hit points is naval wargames where it makes a lot of sense for ships not to be destroyed by single hits and for repairs to restore the damage they've taken. Which...

D&D 5E What are the Roles now?

Blatant self-contradiction. If the class doesn't have the ability to do the things you say it isn't good at, how can it be played "how you wish"?

D&D 5E What are the Roles now?

Well that's radical. All characters have the capability to do anything, whether it's restoring hit points or buffing party members or AoE attacks or negotiating with potential enemies. Makes you wonder why there's classes at all, and it must make D&D very disappointing.

D&D 5E What are the Roles now?

Three of those things are different from the other one. Three describe what the characters do - fighting or thieving or healing. Wizardry defines how the class does things - through casting spells. So, what does/should wizardry Do?

    Traveller Thoughts?

The MegaTraveller vehicle rules were very similar to those in the Striker miniature rules that came out for Classic Traveller, though not an exact match. The spaceship rules were probably based more on High Guard than on the simple set in the LBBs. And armour was something that had already been...

What's the most anticipated RPG of 2015?

Kickstarter backers should start having their physical copies shipped in the next week from the English distributor. Some of the additional material is close to being ready for pdf distribution too. So it did. Well, there'll be more books for it at least.

    Traveller Thoughts?

Just to note, while I agree with a large part of what you say, this bit is only true at the level of a player character. Vehicles and spaceships are significantly different, and there are smaller changes to system generation as well.

    Schrodinger's HP and Combat

Each dice of damage could be allocated independently, although different versions of the combat system took a slightly different approach. 12d6 from an FGMP-15 still hurts just a little. Trail of Cthulhu uses the same rules as Gumshoe, and there are several Fate conversions. In my opinion an...

What things do you miss from D&D?

Some of the single book game expansions, such as the series of historical sourcebooks. Enough in them to get your teeth around playing/running such a setting, no danger of bloat, not so much remorse if you spent money on a single book you didn't like.

    Schrodinger's HP and Combat

Arguably the most "death spiral" aspect is that if you're injured badly enough to disable a body part, that body part stops functioning. Bad if it's the arm you hold your sword with, worse if it's your head and you'r enow unconscious on the floor.

What's the most anticipated RPG of 2015?

Just listing ones that I haven't noticed a mention of: The new edition of Space: 1889 is out in English, though it's a translation so may not count. Red Aegis looked as if it would be interesting, though news seems a little sparse lately. Dark Heresy 2nd edition from FFG is probably the...

D&D 5E Thank you WoTc: I feel like 5th edition has brought the spirit back into D&D.

I suppose this rather depends on what you consider the spirit of D&D to consist of. 5e gets a solid "No" from me in that respect.

D&D 5E What are the Roles now?

Archer isn't a Role in the sense it was used in 4e or in MMOs or in wargames or any of the other places it's used. Ranged damage dealer probably qualifies as a role. And that's certainly not restricted to fighters. The point of Roles is that they describe what sort of things you do when compared...

D&D 5E What are the Roles now?

There's a few earlier examples, such as Spencer's Faerie Queen, where mages can and do "adventure". What? What are you supposed to be able to see at two miles without binoculars or telescopes?

D&D 5E What are the Roles now?

Can you prove that when magic is doing something more effectively than might it's not because the magic is being done by someone higher level than the someone doing the might? If not, then you're using the word verisimilitude to support your belief that's based on what you'd like to be rather...

D&D 5E What are the Roles now?

Well, if it's a question of scope, how about a few lists. Things that can only be done with magic and not might, things that can't be done with magic but can through might, things which can be done by either but where magic is better, things which can be done by either where might is better, and...

D&D 5E What are the Roles now?

I've always sort of assumed that the point of levels was to indicate how powerful a character was, and that low level magic would therefore be less powerful than high level might. I suppose when people want incredible powers from magic and the fast advancement from being low level, well I...

    Traveller Thoughts?

JTAS has a wide range of quality in it's articles, some aren't good at all while some are excellent. As a magazine that's not entirely unexpected. FASA material is excellent, well worth buying. Sadly Digest Group material isn't currently available, but I'd suggest that if you ever see any of it...

RuneQuest vs BRP - How compatible?

Size is nice. It increases your bonus damage with many weapons and adds to your hit points. At the same time, it doesn't do that much. Hit an average human in the head for 12 damage, perfectly possible with many weapons, and they're dead. An average giant might be alive, but they're down. Still...
