D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

There's plenty of that in every edition in my experience, but I see it frequently used as the default way to knock down complaints. In an exchange about how 4e classes feel too similar (fighter & paladin in this particular discussion), I got: "The people who repeat that line over and over did...

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

This is another one I've definitely seen on reddit. Not sure what it is about crunchy tactics games, but I read a lot of replies along the lines of "actually you think this because you're bad at the game / haven't played the game" when voicing dissatisfaction with PF2, 4e, or Lancer.

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

I spend a lot of time on D&D reddit (shame, shame upon me!) and variations on this thought-terminating cliche come up so much. I want to come out of their monitor and shake the people writing them. The logical path always seems to go: 4e did [thing] 4e did badly everyone must hate [thing] I...

    D&D 5E Know any loopholes?

Hexblade's Curse applies damage once per roll when you deal damage, and magic missile has each of the magical bullet hit individually, which adds up to a very funny amount of damage. LudicSavant came up with a great build for this trick, and CMCC Builds put out a fun video on it (content warning...

    is lancer any good?

Karrakin takes that idea and doubles down on it, which is why I dislike it. The game divides mechanics completely into narrative play (freeform RP with the apocalypse-lite rules) and combat play (the mech stuff). In narrative play, you no longer have pilot HP, gear, speed, etc. Instead you get a...

    is lancer any good?

I don't know any of the authors well enough to be confident in this, but I think that some of the balance / GM support issues are related to growing pains. The designers were pretty fresh when they wrote Lancer for the first time, and with each release they've been finding issues with the system...

    is lancer any good?

Little slow to post, but I had a lot of thoughts. I've got 3 big pros and 3 big cons for you. Pro #1 - Crunch: Lancer does the crunchiest of crunchy grid combat. Movement matters down to the hex, action usage is tight, heat/stress & HP/structure management are critical, cover is regularly...

D&D 5E MCDM to revisit the Illrigger.

oops I didn't notice how old this thread was. Time to find the email I used on the MCDM website...

D&D 5E MCDM to revisit the Illrigger.

Excited to hear the class is getting revisited. I think it has some cool ideas but it doesn't play nicely in most adventuring days in my experience, and it's not as exciting as was hoping. Their recent psion and beastheart have been a lot more engaging, so I hope Illrigger v2 comes out more like...

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

Re:diagonals, think this is another case of a bad sample leading to incorrect conclusions. I definitely hear (and voice) complaints about 5e diagonals. The only shrugs I've seen about it are "thankfully this rule is so commonly hated that VTTs let us turn it off easily".

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

Very weird perspective, because I see complaints about second wind (and other non-meat HP effects) from people who disliked 4e. I also see complaints about 5e's crafting system, like just recently I think the top post on the D&D 5e reddit involved a user indicting WotC for not caring to write...

D&D 4E Ben Riggs' "What the Heck Happened with 4th Edition?" seminar at Gen Con 2023

Forgive me if this was already mentioned before, but I think you should also add the Great Recession to the list. 2009 saw a ~5% drop in spending on entertainment in the US. I doubt there are numbers specific to rpgs, but I imagine most of them suffered quite a bit in that era.

I'm mostly interested in the 5e PHB2 and PHB3. Apparently I missed half a dozen or so base classes!

D&D General "Effect as per the spell"

Probably already addressed earlier in the thread, but I really like this "function call" style of design. It codifies potentially complex interactions and allows me to apply a single formula / spell across multiple creatures. A slaad, an arcanoth, a flameskull, and a random fire mage all use the...

D&D 5E Justin Alexander's review of Shattered Obelisk is pretty scathing

For what it's worth, I'm a huge fan of your reviews. Gitp scrubbing them is actually what got me to dig up my old enworld account. I was recently talking with another RPG reviewer who told me that they didn't want to write negative reviews: You don't feel good, you give the author bad press in...

D&D 5E Justin Alexander's review of Shattered Obelisk is pretty scathing

Reading this reminded me a lot of sparky's strixhaven review, i.e. "This sucks and I'm not even having a good time reviewing it."

The Pumpkin Pie Spice RPG Contest Discussion Thread

Life went VERY hectic the last couple of weeks, but I promised @CleverNickName that I would purchase a PSL in honor of getting 2nd place. And I have finally done it. Behold the first pumpkin spice latte I have ever bought! This contest was so much fun. Thank you for coordinating it @CleverNickName!

D&D General Is DnD being mothballed?

Posting Justin Alexander's comments from his discord server, because they mostly echo my own: The game ain't mothballed. The anemic approach to content is consistent with 5th edition's history.
