[Edition Neutral] Points of Light (the product) - how is it?

Noted and thanks for the comments. With PoL I I could cherry pick the best situations of the fantasy genre to generate that feel. This one was more tightly focused. It been said by others as well that "grand sweep of history" feel is part of the appeal of the first one. So I definitely want to...

[Edition Neutral] Points of Light (the product) - how is it?

Like the first Points of Light it is four settings with an area of 135 miles by 95 miles. The theme of this edition is "Exploration beyond your campaign's frontier". Three of the lands depict regions suited for exploration and discovery. Like the first Points of Light the fourth land is set in...

So has the D20 STL been officially revoked?

This was a concern of mine as well. However I found that the Ritual system takes care this area in a lot better way. What rituals that are allowed goes a long way to determine the "feel" of a particular 4th edition setting.

    Points of Light

Thanks for the kind words. The driving purpose of the book was to have four lands to be easily dropped and modified for a referee's campaign. To this end I tried pick situations that are common to most fantasy rpg campaign with a bias toward the Points of Light theme. I did come up with a...

Challenge the Players, Not the Characters' Stats

The use of skill rolls for a random element is the biggest reason I use Character Stats and Skills. There are two benefits here. First you can make characters that considerably better or worse in various areas. Second even the best fail at trivial tasks and worst succeed at impossible tasks...

    How Long Is YOUR Campaign?

I have run the same campaign for fantasy, the Majestic Wilderlands, for 27 years. (since 1981). The average long-term campaign is about a year and a half of sessions averaging 16 hours per month (split between 2 or 3 session per month). The longest I have run was Four years in three distinct...

    How did pre-3E D&D "play"?

Mythmere's primer on old school gaming is a good place to start http://stores.lulu.com/mythmere The basic principles are 1) Rulings, not Rules 2) Player Skill, not Character Abilities 3) Heroic, not Superhero 4) Forget “Game Balance.” Rob Conley

Could we start seeing more system-lite products?

First thanks S'mon and Korgoth for the compliment. Glad to have happy customers. Mini-settings seems to be a niche that works well with system-lite stats. Even with minimal stats they save time for the DM. Most DMs don't either have the time or inclination to deal an area beyond a dozen or two...

What stats there are edition neutral. If you were running a points based game (GURPS, HERO) I recommend multiplying the HD or level by a factor.

If it sells it will be a series like Dungeon Crawl Classics except for settings. As for what the next settings will be they will cover a broad range of regions, themes, and time periods. As there four lands per product we can get really crazy with one or two. With the half page map we can...

Points of Light from Goodman Games

Part of the reason I pursued this project is so that there will be an inexpensive alternative to the Wilderlands of High Fantasy. I love Judges Guild but expecting people to shell out $50 to $70 for an initial buy-in is a bit much. This way they can see how setting looks under the format and...

Some excerpts Introduction Southland is meant to pay homage to the early days of role-playing. Back then, high-level play was about building and defending your own barony. Since the original game was about dungeon crawling, players and DMs that wanted outdoor adventures were forced to turn to...

Points of Light from Goodman Games

I am Rob Conley the author of the just released Points of Light. It is four small settings done in a similar style to Wilderlands of High Fantasy. Each setting contains a numbered hex map, a list of locales keyed to the map, and a short background. Each maps covers an area roughly 120 miles by...
