L&L 5/21 - Hit Points, Our Old Friend

So if I'm reading this correctly, you get X number of hit dice (with X presumably equaling your level?) and you can roll 1 (or more?) during each rest period and you recover N number per day (presumably NOT your level, cause that'd be all of them, but presumably NOT just 1 cause that'd make...

    A Chivalrous Compromise for Paladin

I've pointed this out elsewhere but "Paladin" means champion or defender of a cause. While I understand that some folks would prefer a different name to distinguish from common D&D usage, I think bringing the game usage into accord with the real world usage is its own benefit.

Paladin Design Goals ... WotC Blog

The idea of having multiple names for a Paladin seems ridiculous to me. In a previous edition, they tried to have 9. Paladin is the right word regardless of the alignment: pal·a·din [pal-uh-din] noun 1. any one of the 12 legendary peers or knightly champions in attendance on Charlemagne. 2...

    D&D 5E Restrictions in D&D Next

I'm very skeptical of this approach. D&D is the first/biggest/baddest RPG ever. I don't think it should be appealing to a niche. To my mind, core D&D should be an all-purpose fantasy RPG, appealing to the broadest possible audience. Smaller RPGs need to be more distinctive because they need to...

    [Ro3 5/15] Traits? lol wut?

No. DMs/Players will have the option to choose skills/traits/feats rather than using the default Backgrounds/Themes. And DMs will have the option to not use Backgrounds/Themes at all. So, you know, the opposite of what you just said...

D&D 5E Should magic items stay out of the next PHB?

Let's talk PROs and CONs: PRO List Easier for players to reference during play* Easier for character creation if players are starting at higher levels* Easier for characters to shop if it's that kind of a game* Many players own a copy of the DMG and/or will be familiar with its contents anyway...

    D&D 5E Restrictions in D&D Next

When I build out a new setting, I decide what classes to include, what races to include, what variant rules to use, etc. I do not require the game designers to make up restrictions for me, and I will ignore any restrictions they put in place. If the goal of the new edition is to create an...

Did you sign up to be a part of gaming history?

I suspect the part of the response form that says "who did you play" with will give you away...

    What about adventures?

Anecdotally, I can count on one hand the number of adventures I've bought in the last 20 years. But I don't disagree that adventures were a key to Paizo's success.

Please step away from the 4th edition "effect everything" abilities.

Thanks. I clearly did not read that closely enough the first time. That's actually pretty weird. "I name thee EVIL, shifty merchant, and thou shalt feel my WRATH!"

    Easy Paladin Poll

Maybe I'm being dim, but if about half the people who voted want Paladins to only be LG and the other half want no alignment restriction, that tells me that the class should be presented with an optional alignment restriction. You don't build a class with a default alignment restriction if half...

Please step away from the 4th edition "effect everything" abilities.

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but: The latest Paladin blog said there WOULD be a Smite Evil ability. Where does this "I don't want the Paladin to be able to smite everything." thing come from?

Paladin Design Goals ... WotC Blog

I noticed the same thing. Given that those were literally the last two words of the post, I have to imagine it was a deliberate tease. Could this be like Pathfinder, where they give the PC a certain number of "Stamina Points" to power certain abilities? (I'm thinking of Pathfinder's Rage...

Paladin Design Goals ... WotC Blog

I'm not normally one to be negative, but this is a case where I really think they're going in the wrong direction. It sounds like they're going to basically double down on the 3e paladin and just make some of the abilities weirder. (Your magic mount now forces other players to keep track of...

Plea to traditionalist fans: No more “half” races?

It has not. And given what the designers have said about inclusion on the class side, I would be *stunned* if half-elf and half-orc weren't in the 5e PHB.

[L&L] Balancing the Wizards in D&D

Saying that the game should be designed to meet what 90% of the audience wants versus what 10% wants is not favoritism. It's common sense. (A few disclaimers: I made up those numbers. I'm just going by Mike Mearls saying there was overwhelming support for At Wills. If folks are opposed to At...

Rituals are in it would seem

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't 4e explicitly include Utility Spells that are granted to casters every few levels? Two points about 5e rituals: 1) just because they're working on 5e ritual rules doesn't mean those rules will be core or will even show up in the first few books (they've...

D&D Next Chat Transcript (Mike Mearls & Jeremy Crawford)

Dude. This is the first set of playtest rules. There will be others, as already announced. Rules down the road will have character creation.

D&D Next Chat Transcript (Mike Mearls & Jeremy Crawford)

No. Character creation is an *optional* add-on to the game (that can be bypassed by playing pre-gens). Assuming that it takes 4 hours to make a character and you play the character for 20 4 hour sessions, that's less than 5% of your total time in play. Character creation has its own set of rules...
