D&D 5E Should the Fighter's "Second Wind" ability grant temporary HP instead of regular HP?

It sounds like your issues are related to non-standard elements featured in your campaign (the frequency of magical portals and general "gritty"-ness). Given that, I suspect the solution to your problem will be found with specialized modules in the DMG which reflect the difference between your...

D&D 5E Should the Fighter's "Second Wind" ability grant temporary HP instead of regular HP?

What the heck is a pre-4e healing expectation? I recall people having these arguments around hit points as far back as the mid-80s at least. If you just mean *rate of healing*, they've heavily implied there be rules for characters recovering HP slower.

With charisma dumped, And strength score maxed, No goblin shall survive my hacks, Let those who worship Gruumsh face facts: Beware my +3 Dwarven Axe!

    D&D 5E My Hope for D&D 5/N

In my experience running Pathfinder/3e: 1) It's perfectly fine to eyeball encounters 2) NPCs don't need to be fully statted out (I routinely use characters that are a short list of modifiers, HP, and attacks) 3) If the PCs are a little more powerful, because you gave them "too much treasure"...

D&D 5E Should the Fighter's "Second Wind" ability grant temporary HP instead of regular HP?

Second Wind is the "pick yourself up off the mat" ability. The fighter looks like he's down for the count but he sucks it up, shakes it off, and keeps fighting. Given that this happens all the time in the real world (in televised events no less) it's surprising that people continue to dismiss...

D&D 5E Starter Set Command Spell

My problem is that I can only memorize a few spells per day.

D&D 5E Is Anyone Unhappy About Non-LG Paladins?

So it definitely sounds like the current argument is: Should classes with divine power sources (not just Paladins, but Clerics, Druids, etc.) be at risk of losing their special powers if they violate the dictates of their oath/religion/god? The possible positions on this issue are: Player(s)...

D&D 5E Is Anyone Unhappy About Non-LG Paladins?

It sounds like there are some people saying "Paladins need special rules to cover their allegiance to their god/faith/order." Do these people feel the same way about Clerics? I'd be interested to know why or why not.

    D&D 5E Legends & Lore 6/16/14

It's certainly LIKELY that they will collaborate again, but it sounds like everybody is being cautious about publicly committing until they have contracts in place. (And maybe till they confirm a positive reaction to their first offering?)

    When did "PHB" become "PH"?

When WotC released the d20 License, they gave permission for publishers to abbreviate the Player's Handbook as "PHB" so presumably that was what they were using internally circa 2002 or so: Q: Can I reference the Player's Handbook or any other published d20 product? A: The d20 System Guide...

    D&D 5E Legends & Lore 6/16/14

They explicitly did NOT say that they would partner with Kobold Press again (though it seems likely). Only that they would partner with "other RPG studios" again. And given that their storylines are tied to Organized Play, you are pretty much guaranteed to only see Forgotten Realms adventures...

Why has WotC stopped posting on ENWorld?

So you're saying that people are more reasonable when they DON'T have to account for past actions? Maybe that's true, but it sure SOUNDS wrong.

    D&D 5E Starter Set Excerpt 2 -- Equipment

But there are some areas of overlap. Consider Disguise Kit and Deception, for example.

D&D 5E Would you play in or run a 2 hour pick up game of D&D ?

So to be clear: The consensus is very firmly that some people would enjoy it and others wouldn't.

    D&D 5E Armored Mages

I don't understand how this is simpler. It's the same list that's in the playtest, but with more caveats around spellcasting. That seems (to me at least) to be more complicated by definition.

D&D 5E Would you play in or run a 2 hour pick up game of D&D ?

I do those things too, of course. You seem to be making my point for me! If you go to a convention, odds are you're going to want to do a mix of many different things. When I was at GenCon last year, I played: D&D, Pathfinder, Fiasco, Champions, Weis Marvel RPG, old school DC Heroes, Star...

D&D 5E If the Starter Set really was as re-playable as Settlers of Catan

An important distinction: A game of Settlers takes an hour or two. Running all the way through the adventure in the Starter Set will take 30+ hours. (Assumes 8 4 hour sessions, leveling after session 1, 2, 4, and 6.) So by the time you finish playing through the Starter Set *once* you've...

D&D 5E Scoopa doopa doop! Legends & Lore in the loop! (6/9/14)

Surely the lesson here is that the video was overly complicated. I don't see why a much more concise video wouldn't have been perfectly pleasant.

D&D 5E Would you play in or run a 2 hour pick up game of D&D ?

As someone who has played plenty of absolutely crackerjack convention games spanning 2-4 hours with pregens, I can say: That's a very limiting view point you have there. Campaigns are also good, but one does not preclude the existence or appreciation of the other.
