In 4e, if 4 orcs rush by your fighter to stab the pointy hat, you get 4 Oppertunity Attacks, and stop them from moving if you are a fighter.
In 5e, if four orcs rush past you to kill the wizard, you get one attack, and unless you are using optional rules...
They did something similar to one of those! In Player's options- Heros of the Elemental Chaos!

I'd like to nominate Dreamscarred Press. They may only publish niche products, but there products are works of excellence that top most wizards of the coast products.
It also needs an other option- Energy Ball+ Energist = Fire Ball, Ice Ball, Electricity Ball, Concussion Ball, Rimefire Ball, Plasma Ball, Ash Ball, Thunder Ball, Frost Ball, and Gale Balls.

IME, from about levels 1-7 they are about as powerful as a well build psion or sorcerer. The Duskblade still left the entire party in the dust, however.
My problem with the fighter?
It's BORING.
It has two main actions during combat. Charge, or full attack.
Sure, you can have feats that vary how well those work, but that's pretty much all they do.
