Pathfinder 1E Paizo Bites- A Rant

It has always been a truism that if a product is good, the designer gets the credit, and if it's bad the editor gets the blame. Ironically, it's editors (who are sometimes called developers--the lines blur from company to company) who can make or break a product. Any designer who says he...

Pathfinder 1E Paizo Bites- A Rant

Or they do freelance work for Malhavoc. (Sorry, I couldn't resist. Malhavoc freelancers who write an entire book on their own retain the copyrights of their own work and--of course--have final say over any editing and development changes. Not that that's much help to the industry, since we use...

    Praise for Necromancer Games

I've got nothing but good things to say about Necromancer as well. Good bunch of guys.

What are the best selling d20 products so far?

I can think of three without trying hard, but company financing isn't the kind of thing that's generally made public (and so I've no right to name the companies here). I suspect two have been operating without a profit for a while. Maybe from the get-go. In fact, good capitalization is the only...

My 5-year-old son defeated his first dragon...

That's so cool. Some of my favorite gaming experiences have been running games for really little kids who are really into it. I ran a game at a convention for a boy about 7 and his little 5 year old sister. When they had defeated a big monster and taken it's treasure (which the little boy...

What are the best selling d20 products so far?

I'd be very surprised to learn that Creature Collection wasn't the best selling non-WotC d20 product. I'd suspect that it's probably one of the best selling non-WotC rpg products of the last few years. It wasn't just early. It was the: First non-WotC d20 hardcover. First d20 monster book...

    D&D 4E Betting on 4e

Jonathan doesn't talk like that. (And that's not the phoniest part of that humorous press release.) That said, whatever my "ranks" are, it's not so bad. ;) While it would be way worse to be let go rather than leave voluntarily, I'm certainly even those people who were laid off would probably...

    Monte on covers

I don't. Which is why I refered to it [valuing covers over text] as hyperbole and to those who said it as people who couldn't understand the contents of the book in the first place. Edit: fixed a typo.

No more "fluff"!!! [A rant and a request]

I've never liked either term myself, because they imply sometimes unwarrented or even unintentional judgements. They also suggest that material has to be one or the other, which I think is a mistake. Something mechanical can, when done correctly, imply a lot of its own flavor. "Crunch" can be...

    Has 3.5E "failed"?

Actually, I disagree with the 1st, 3rd, and 5th points as being signs of what you label them to be. One of my biggest gripes with WotC/Hasbro and their management of the D&D brand is the fact that the layoffs in their rpg department that happened after I left came within 12 months of the launch...

Ennies judges seek publisher inputs on categories

So does that mean that you'd like to keep away from non-d20 material? I think Mutants and Masterminds did well last year despite not actually having the d20 logo. As of right now, I'm not sure what category I'd submit Arcana Unearthed, for example.

Diamond Throne Setting, so whats cool about it

No. For whatever it's worth, I ran a purely AU campaign for many months, while writing and developing (and playtesting) the rules. My current game is a D&D/AU blend (it has a litorian bear totem warrior, a litorian unfettered, a sibeccai cleric/rogue, a giant champion of freedom, and a human...

    Free Monster! New Books!

Check out the Night Beast, a free new monster at montecook.com. It's a preview for the 160 page Arcana Unearthed themed bestiary, Legacy of the Dragons. The pdf is available now! The print version is available in May. If you liked Arcana Unearthed, I think you'll want to check it out. If you...

Groups with more than 4 PCs - I'm New

I've written columns on my website about this topic here: http://www.montecook.com/arch_dmonly27.html and here: http://www.montecook.com/dmonly.html My first couple of columns in Dungeoncraft also dealt with the topic. It's challenging, but not as scary as some people would have you believe.

    Scrying is Fooled by-?

BoEM III has a lot of spells that muck with scrying and variant rules that talk about materials and energies that can ruin scrying as well if they are nearby the location being scried. (I thought originally that you were looking strictly at PH spells.)

    Scrying is Fooled by-?

I think you might be looking for the 8th level spell screen. Although it looks like the DM has taken some liberties (which is really cool, if you ask me).

    Trying out a super-sale

Only if no one at RPGNow is paying attention. Certainly won't work if they then say on the front page of ENWorld that they're having a sale or have slashed prices. But then again, if it's a permanent change rather than a short sale, maybe it shouldn't matter. Really, my heart's not in coming up...

    Trying out a super-sale

For what it's worth, I certainly am not complaining about the effect the sales items have on the best seller lists. (Although I do think mine was a simple solution--just don't count the sales of sale products for purposes of the list.) Last year, we had tremendous success with our big sale...

    Trying out a super-sale

I'd think the easiest fix for the problem would be to go back and disallow any sales of products that are on sale.

    Trying out a super-sale

I can see a small but measurable increase in my sales at RPGNow for the last two days. I suspect that means that overall, the sale is benefiting James and the site greatly. Well done.
