    D&D General On Grognardism...

That's why I like 5E...its roots are definitely D&D. It cleaned up things that bothered me like AC. Not just THAC0, but the you can't hit it if you tried AC -8. Those higher AC's pretty well made fighters worthless other than as meat bags so that mages could kill it. I don't think Gary...

    D&D General On Grognardism...

Yup marking your die with a crayon was a right of passage...The die 20 was so versatile. It was used as 1d10/ 1d20/1d100. If you didn't have a d8 or d12 it could substitute for them by rerolling higher rolls. You only really needed was a d20 and a handful of d6's.

    D&D General On Grognardism...

I started playing D&D in '77 (white box edition)-slowly jumped into AD&D...heh because TSR was slow in releasing the books...Monster Manual in '77, PHB in '78, went to Gen Con XII to pick up the DMG in '79. I ate everything I could of D&D in those days. Judges Guild and Dragon magazine. I...

    D&D 1E Giving an AD&D feel to 5e

I started with white box D&D in '77...went to my first Gen Con in '79(XII)...and never played with mini's other than for party order. None of the Gen Con games I played used mini's. Quit playing D&D when 2nd came out...We've been using miniatures since I got back into D&D about 10 years ago...

yeah...but how many people used squares or grid...I mean even official events by RPGA at Gen Con didn't use them.

D&D 5E What Single Thing Would You Eliminate

I would make it Pre-Battle...and probably only have 2 modifiers...the number of battles before you took a short rest and the number of battles before you took a long rest...

D&D 5E I'd really, really like to hear about some fights with Strahd . . !

I know...he wasn't hidden per the rules...just per the English language... In my campaign...I'm stricter on attacking...If you can't see them...even if they haven't hid per the rules, I treat them as hidden and you have to guess as to where they are.

D&D 5E I'd really, really like to hear about some fights with Strahd . . !

no...just hiding in the darkness...not as an action...Warlock was able to see him...because she also had DevilSight.

D&D 5E What Single Thing Would You Eliminate

and back on topic... I would remove getting spells back from a long rest. Some other system would have to be implemented to recover spells.

D&D 5E I'd really, really like to hear about some fights with Strahd . . !

Yes basically gave him Devilsight...but not to the Spawn...I also took away his ability to walk through walls. He got disadvantage because Strahd could see him...

D&D 5E What Single Thing Would You Eliminate

When we talk about risk and reward. XP rewards in 5E D&D don't take in to account whether the party has recently taken a short or long rest. In our current system the encounters is equal whether the party is carrying damage into the fight, or is down spells. So to maximize power by the team...

D&D 5E I'd really, really like to hear about some fights with Strahd . . !

Here's my writeup of CoS which we finished last year. Just finished Curse Of Strahd...Took us over a year...We spent about 4 months in Beast of Graenseskov. The final session was epic like it should be. My group was 7 players at 9th level. 3 of the players are experienced, the other 4 are...

    D&D 1E Giving an AD&D feel to 5e

I don't know if I agree...CoS is Magic Item low...and PoTA is turning out to be the same(They are level 9 soon to be 10...They've found the Stone Thrower, Windvane, Platemail, half Plate, and a Wand of Magic Missile and some other minor magic). My group hasn't complained and are doing fine...

D&D 5E The -10 Myth: How a Poorly-Worded Gygaxian Rule Became the Modern Death Save

I have to agree with you...GH was AD&D and FR was 2nd Edition...and Drizzt was FR and first came out in '88...

D&D 5E The -10 Myth: How a Poorly-Worded Gygaxian Rule Became the Modern Death Save

It was to give Elves a Tolkien-like flair. They basically lived forever and when they died their spirits didn't go to the outer planes(that was reserved for creatures that had souls), they stuck around on the material plane.
