Did Gygax owe a bit of thanks to WotC?

You've written a critical thread about someone you both respected and were thankful for. The criticism you brought up was that Gary was critical of a product made by a company that you feel he might have owed thanks. By posting this thread aren't you doing exactly what you said Gary did? Of...

Did Gygax owe a bit of thanks to WotC?

I wouldn't say you owed him any thanks. I would say it is up to you personally to decide if the enjoyment you gained made you feel like thanking him.

    [April] What are you reading?

Just finished reading Jim Butcher's Changes. Currently reading Stephen Ambrose's Pegasus Bridge.

Rate Clash of the Titans (2010)

It's not as good as the original. There simply was not enough story to go along with the action. I don't expect an accurate depiction of Greek mythology, but a little effort would have been nice. It's hardly the worst action/fantasy movie though. I was probably too generous by giving a 7/10...

:( Who else is unhappy that XP comments are now showing up in the post?

I'm firmly on the side of not having the xp messages show up in a thread. It really looks like it could pile up in arguments. It also adds at least a little more work for the mods. What starts out as a perfectly reasonable reply can end up seeming like a flame with the xp messages.

    Ignore lists

No one's on my ignore list. I try not to take anything posted on a web forum too seriously, plus I'm paranoid and would be afraid to miss what someone I'm ignoring is saying about me. ;)

Did Gygax owe a bit of thanks to WotC?

Does a reviewer that gets a product for free owe the company that gave her the product a good review? Does a retired athlete that doesn't like the way his sport has changed owe it to the sport to be quiet? Of course not. Gary didn't owe anything to WotC. He was often asked his feelings on...

Half Halfling vs Sporc (final round)

That's really a step up. I remember sporcs in the cafeteria back when I was in school. Wouldn't they be quarterlings? I don't even want to know where quarter horses come from though.

    [March] What are you reading?

So far in March, I've read Mouseferatu's The Conqueror's Shadow and David Drake's The Sharp End. I enjoyed both. Currently I'm reading Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August.

    The Conqueror's Shadow, now available!

I finished The Conqueror's Shadow a little while ago, and have similar feelings. The main plot for the story was interesting, and I liked the main character a lot. I liked the sarcastic humor, but it came from so many different characters that it made it hard to get a feel for the different...

    OotS #707 is up

You would expect a resistance movement to jail and grant a trial to a probable spy? The most humane thing I'd expect from such a group would be to leave the suspected spy bound and gagged in the cell he was found in. Taking him anywhere near a hidden location would be potential suicide due to...

The Blind Side -- the racial contraversy

If you include TV shows there's at least a couple more for your list. Webster -- White family takes in a black orphan. Punky Brewster -- Old white man takes in a white kid.

Do castles make sense in a world of dragons & spells?

I didn't mean to imply that knights' political and social power came first. The practice I was talking about growing was the practice of heavy cavalryman moving from aristocrat to noble. This certainly happend because cavalry were an effective, and dashing, hammer to infantry's traditional...

Do castles make sense in a world of dragons & spells?

I'm sorry that you took offense. Nothing I wrote was meant as anything but discussion of a topic, well an off topic. :) My position is simply that knighthood started as a way to guarantee that a nation had access to heavy cavalry. Ancient cavalrymen had to be well off to afford horses and...

Do castles make sense in a world of dragons & spells?

The problem is that the serfs didn't own the land and only got to keep what was allowed by the nobles. Plenty of non-nobles in the ancient world had less technology, but lived above subsistence level because they kept more of what they created. Innovation eventually improved the common...

Do castles make sense in a world of dragons & spells?

I would say economics, social conditions, tactics, and politics all play important parts in what military units and defenses are used. Heavy cavalry filled the void left by the professional armies after the fall of the Roman Empire, but it existed largely because those in power maintained the...

Do castles make sense in a world of dragons & spells?

I agree with most of your points, but knights existed in the numbers they did because of politics and social conditions over economics or battlefield effectiveness. Medieval nobles spent their nations' resources equipping themselves because they had the power to, and wanted to have the best...

Do castles make sense in a world of dragons & spells?

Castles might look a bit different, but they certainly still make sense in a fantasy world. They're perfectly suited against mundane ground-based enemies. Ballistas and netting could be added to help defend against aerial attacks. In a high magic world, I'd expect a castle to be warded...
