I don't mind at all. =) I started with 1E, although I love the 4E cosmology better. We can play with whatever cosmology we like. I am expecting that they will cover both well enough. =)

They do explicitly say you can freely mix and max. If you like all of the proficiencies for Artisan take them and just add the Sage special ability... with your DM's permission of course.
