Best edition for new players: pick any two

Hey, those feats are precious! Also, turns out Hexblade has all Cha powers. A melee warlock needs Con not Cha.

Best edition for new players: pick any two

Sorry, I frustrated folks with my earlier posts. Let me start over. Say I've been hearing about Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms and I'm excited to create a Sentinel druid. I love the kind of "nature's warrior" type of concept. I'm thinking a "leopard man" someone who can hang out in trees...

Best edition for new players: pick any two

No decent melee attacks. Wrong skills and severely limited power selection due to low int. Result: modest, not remarkable, improvement in hit points. BUT I like this build. The temp hit points make it interesting. It's certainly not something a beginner could find on his own, though...

Best edition for new players: pick any two

I agree, the transition from 2e to 3e made the game much more accessible. But there are a *lot* of rules in 3.5e and I've seen the beginner get that "deer in headlights" look playing it quite often.

Best edition for new players: pick any two

I'm not satisfied with anything that's been posted so far. I have more confidence in the statement now, not less. I have to admit I haven't tried hexblade. You may be right. Can you take skills like Endurance and Athletics?

Best edition for new players: pick any two

This is a shoehorn. No melee weapon? Also the skills are all wrong. Arcana? Streetwise? No go. All of these offer only a marginal difference in hit points. Durable doesn't help at all. It's been a while since I've tried this. I'm glad 4e almost allows it since it's not that uncommon...

Best edition for new players: pick any two

Agreed. But some systems restrict you more than others. I feel like 4e is the worst offender of the dozen or so systems I've played.

Best edition for new players: pick any two

I disagree. A 3.5e sorcerer fits this bill perfectly. You've misread my post. Take two 10th level wardens. Give one average hp for his class. Do your best to pump up the hp of the other. Result: marginal different in hp. Voila! Shoehorn. Thanks but...no thanks. I fully agree. My...

If WoTC were to give up on making DnD RPGs..

As far as OGL, I think the cat is out of the bag. Copyright covers the text and images they've created for 4e but *not* the game mechanics. If WotC suddenly vanished, the good parts of 4e would be cycled into a third party d20 SRD derivative that combines the best of both editions. ...In...

Best edition for new players: pick any two

Concepts I've been unable to create satisfactorily/effectively with 4e: - A melee-focused warlock who does not understand magic or the source of his power and has below average intelligence. - A character who has great physical resiliance (read: has significantly more hit points than normal...

3 reasons why the design team shouldn't visit ENWorld

How could a game designer create a situation where s/he can get feedback from fans where the noise-to-signal ration is lower?

Best edition for new players: pick any two

Well my original post has been derailed a bit. I suppose it's my fault for rambling. My intended discussion topic was: Have others observed a significantly lower long-term retention rate when you start new players with 4e? Or is it just me?

Ok, now i'm REALLY CONFUSED. AKA, do any of you think you know what WotC is doing?

I'm as confused as you are. My instinct is that something big is afoot. We'll all know what it was by the time GenCon is over. Also, I predict it can't be bad news. We've had enough of that already. :AMN: (eternal optimist)

Best edition for new players: pick any two

I know I'm getting dangerously close to an edition war but I've seen this point made in a couple different threads that many people accept and I don't agree with: "4e is a good game for new players" While I agree that we need this game to appeal to new players (especially younger players!)...

What if WotC just said "That's it."

In all likelihood some other game company would step up and fill the void. Any game can benefit refinement and improvement. So, there would be demand for a revised version. I think that folks who complain about "too many versions" are really complaining the the new versions are too extreme...

Show me the dungeon I’ll show you the world

It's a noble idea, but selecting a charity is a very personal thing. I think that until you open the target charities to an unrestricted set, you'll have a very restricted pool of authors. So, ironically, it's by refusing to support other charities that you are doing less good for your own...

    Tact-Tiles on eBay

I find your excuse flimsy sir! I have a couple rugrats of my own. They make excellent colossal miniatures and snack fetchers. ;)

    Swift Action Vs Free Action

The history here is that swift actions weren't in the original rulebooks. They were added on later when it became clear that it was hard to limit free actions. For what it's worth, I think this is one of the reasons that combat takes longer and longer as you get higher in level: high level...

    D&D 3E/3.5 What do you ban? (3.5)

It's been a while since I ran a 3.5e game. My approach was to require approval for anything outside of the core rulebooks, but I usually ok'd any requests for such. I nerfed these feats: Power Attack, Spirited Charge I banned or nerfed these spells: glitterdust, grease, entangle, black...
