How much does the RPG system actually matter....for player enjoyment?

    As I said in post 60 (http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?339044-How-much-does-the-RPG-system-actually-matter-for-player-enjoyment&p=6163137&viewfull=1#post6163137)

How much does the RPG system actually matter....for player enjoyment?

If only limitation is being a maid game then a lot of different stories can be told. Like: A) An average anybody inherits a large mansion with hundreds of maids. B) The Warrior-Maids of the Space emperor and their fight against the planet devouring forces of Entropy. C) A demon lord had fallen...

How much does the RPG system actually matter....for player enjoyment?

While I kind of understand what you are implying, the discussion is more in line if you have story about anime maids will the players have fun if the groups is using BESM/BESM D20?, OVA? In Nomine Anime? Gurps? Maid RPG? Nechronica? Fate? Golden Sky Stories? ... etc. Point can be made that all...

    anime challenge

Oh by the way, Naruto d20 is a real (fan created) thing. It is based on D20 Modern. http://www.narutod20.com/downloads/ There are at least 2 variants of Pokemon D20. Here is one (cannot remember where I found the other) http://pokemondtwenty.wikidot.com/start

    anime challenge

Have you considered using BESM D20 or Slayers D20? While the feel of the table is different to most "typical D&D" both go a long way to approximate anime feel in D20 terms (as it is the intention).

How much does the RPG system actually matter....for player enjoyment?

To me the game is determined by the interaction of three factors: DM, Players and System. So to answer the question I do think system matters, but not exclusively determine the game success. One way to look at it is like a language, while many ones can serve a given end choosing the best...

    "Support", who needs it?

I like to echo the sentiment that ease of acquisition is a factor for new players. Not to tangent too much, but at least I am of the opinion that game groups' membership is more fluid (people joining and leaving) compared to the previous decades. Also, in a new edition (up to a point in time)...

    The Backseat GM

Sometimes it is instinctual reaction. While riding shotgun with another person, especially if you are usually are the one who drives, it is uncommon to feel that the car is out of control. Say you are approaching a stop sign. In your mind you think "Ok, should be applying the breaks Now...

Dodging Fireballs and other Readied Action Sheneigans

Now then what do you think about shooting the glowing bead (fine object) out of the air? An arrow (or a thrown item) should probably count as an "solid obstacle or material body" if it hits. I would probably rule that it detonates halfway between you and the caster (if aimed in your direction)...

    Free Will and Story

I wanted to point out that for such self-professed stickler to the rules Jim seems to have conveniently forgotten that "Until the End of the Encounter: The effect ends when you take a rest (short or extended) or after 5 minutes." (PHB1 pp 278). Therefore he could not have taken an army by...

Suport for the Art of DM-ing

Thank you for your replies. I tried to limit my initial examples so there is not just wall of text. Just enough to get us started. Also, the Art of DM-ing is hard to quantify as there are many specifics particular to the group. In other words things acceptable in one situation/group/system...

Suport for the Art of DM-ing

The usual disclaimer: Not edition waring. Please keep it on topic etc. I think with each subsequent edition there was (at least) an attempt to improve the science of DM-ing. I would acknowledge that not everyone likes the changes in the rules. Lets leave it at that as this not what this thread...

    Experience Point: Screw the rules

In my view one of the use of rules is so we have a shared common ground on which to base our decisions. Having coordinated mores and values is usually a good thing. However, the diversity of life can present mitigating circumstances. For example,(speaking hypothetically) running somebody over...

    Long Adventures and Levelling. etc.?

First, on the meta level different editions have different implied rates of advancement. For example, 2e DMG recommends 4-6 adventures to level up (and judging from my experience with Dungeon magazine that is accurate estimate). Put in another way a 12 part adventure path will gain you 2 may be...

Pros and Cons of going mainstream

You have your experiences, I have mine. The disparity does not mean imply exclusivity. EGG did say (in DMG 1e) both The players want to play this game and not the one of your devising and that This is your campaign, change it so it is fun for you. "Master of the game" (1989) pp15 "the Game...

Pros and Cons of going mainstream

That is one of the things I been trying to talk about- the difference in expectations stemming from both a shifting "official" position how the game is supposed to be played and the gradual change in demographics (I cannot think of better term in expressing the opinion that more people play with...

Pros and Cons of going mainstream

I bring that example up because I feel that feel that some people forget that difference exist. A lot of crunch carried over between those two subsequent editions, but the numerical statistics does not mean the same things. Even starting with Char-gen, 3d6 and 4d6 drop lowest may both result in...

Pros and Cons of going mainstream

James Watt in DMG 2 pp5: "Start by knowing when to say no. If I player bring new options to your table that does not fit in your game, it is ok to tell the player to hold onto the idea until the campaign wraps up and you (or somebody else in your group) starts something new... know the limits of...

Pros and Cons of going mainstream

Cannot say I agree with his assessment either, but similar views have been posted occasionally. It also seems to echo Mearls' statement that people choose to deviate from the official game because they feel that 4e punishes active imagination. (ref...

Pros and Cons of going mainstream

I think the conflict of interest was assumed. The players were encouraged to get involved in the game, but not in defining the mechanics. Suggest, offer, plead their case- Yes. Tell the DM, this is the Rule -No. There was an example [in the DMG] of player wanting to be from noble background...
