It reduces the Bard's chance to not get hit from suck to bad. Misty Step is the spell which actually has a chance of _preventing_ all those attacks. So, Shield is actually worse that I was rating it. In all fairness, my character also has the Alert feat and expertise in Perception.

You might be operating under the assumption that Shield will let you easily run away from the enemy and take up an ideal defensive position. I don't share that assumption. When you cast Shield, you are defending against the enemy's primary attack and an opportunity attack (when you run away)...

I'm not at all convinced that Shield helps you survive until you get away. Misty Step, occurring on a bonus action, permits the bard to use Cutting Words (which makes the enemy's to-hit average the same penalty it would take from Shield) AND get the hell out of dodge post-haste.

There's always a chance you end up on the front line as the enemy can ambush you from an unexpected angle. I don't plan on never being on the front line. I plan on getting out of it asap.

I'm 8th lvl. I have an AC of 15. Shield would bump my bard's AC to 20 for one turn. Even 20 AC is pretty negligible if you are on the front line and you can't use Cutting Words. Shield seems subpar.

You should add Mystic Step to Magical Secrets @ 6th lvl. It is probably the best defensive spell available to the Bard in the lower levels. (For the Bard of Lore, fleeing is better than having a few more points of AC in almost every scenario.) Also, it has a lot of uses as movement.
