    D&D 5E A Few Questions: Check/Save Difference, Proficiency bonus

Is there a functional difference between an ability check and a saving throw? It seems saves are a subset of ability checks: All saves are checks, but not all checks are saves. For example Cause Fear lets the target use its action to make a Wisdom check to try to remove the spell. Is there a...

    D&D 5E [Merged] D&D Next/5E Release Schedule Threads

1e differentiated itself from the previous edition by adding "Advanced." Of course they wouldn't have put "first edition" on the cover. 2e has it right in the logo. 3.0 I'm not sure since I don't have my 3.0 PHB any more, but 3.5 is boldly emblazoned on the front cover. 4e has it on the back...

    D&D 5E [Merged] D&D Next/5E Release Schedule Threads

Somebody new wants to get into the game. You tell them to buy the D&D Player's handbook. They ask which one--there's a bunch of different ones for sale online. You tell them "The one that doesn't say 3rd edition or 4th edition etc. It was released in 2014." Now double the confusion if it's a...

    D&D 5E [Merged] D&D Next/5E Release Schedule Threads

But until that point you're going to have to call it "The D&D that was released in 2014" as opposed to 4th edition or 3rd edition.

    D&D 5E [Merged] D&D Next/5E Release Schedule Threads

Can't say I'm a fan of simply naming it "Dungeons and Dragons." I can see a lot of confusion for novices getting into the game. "Next" "Unity Edition" "5th Edition" "Heritage" "Legacy" "Revenge of the Flumph" or just about anything else would've been preferable to me. Art looks great though.

    D&D 4E Amethyst 4E Compendium released

I'll have to check this out, see how you treat firearms compared to my 4e Fallout game.

D&D 5E The Ravenloft Rule and D&D5; or how to control player power

4e did a great job at removing the "I win" buttons, but it remains to be seen if 5e will keep a tight leash on player power, or if it gets looser as time goes on. Some people see that as a feature.

A readied action leading to going twice in a row?

For this example I'm using the "Gargoyle Rake" which has the stone form ability which it can end as a minor action. Alice and Bob are readying an attack for when the gargoyle ends its stone form. Their readied action is an immediate reaction to the triggering event. When the gargoyle's turn...

    D&D 5E D&D Next: Let's discuss it's mass multimedia goal.

One thing that's always surprised me is how WotC hasn't attempted RPG rules/setting products for Hasbro's other, more popular properties: GI Joe Transformers My Little Pony Magic: The Gathering These all have sizable followings, most have comics, cartoons, toys, etc., and I've seen fan-written...

    D&D 5E Art in 5e...?

(DiTerlizzi derail in progress) So is this the appropriate thread to show off the prints Tony signed for me at Gen Con in 2000? (framing my Adam Rex "Wrath of Manshoon")

Pathfinder 1E So the question is... why is pathfinder selling so well?

Maybe I should've phrased that better. The people actively participating in the types threads OP is citing are a tiny fraction. What is it, 30 people tops? Usually they boil down to a half dozen people arguing semantics after page 10.

Pathfinder 1E So the question is... why is pathfinder selling so well?

To address OP's question (and some of these were already mentioned): It's human nature to want to build on/improve things you like. If people *weren't* arguing about Pathfinder, I would find it more odd. I'm a diehard 4e fan and I know it has plenty of flaws, so I strive to fix them. Even...

D&D 5E Does 5E avoid the overloads of previous editions?

Give me lots of crunch-light mini-setting books like the Neverwinter campaign guide. God, that thing is fabulous.

    DDI and Essentials

The Monster Vault is a superb product, probably one of the best produced for 4e. Everything about it is better than the MM1. I'll second the suggestion to give DDI a shot, at least for the magazines. The Compendium is essential for me, as well. I stopped bringing books to sessions about 5...

Pathfinder 1E So what do you think is wrong with Pathfinder? Post your problems and we will fix it.

I think "magic in the traditional sense" implies supernatural things going on. Thus, "not magic in the traditional sense" means the opposite. IMO the martial power source's abilities are extraordinary, but not supernatural. I believe this thread has branched off on this tangent because someone...

Pathfinder 1E So what do you think is wrong with Pathfinder? Post your problems and we will fix it.

Some people are going to point to that first sentence and interpret the martial power source as magic, some are not. Personally, I've seen people demonstrate extraordinary, unbelievable abilities IRL, but I don't claim they're magical.
