D&D 5E [IC] hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen

Summoning his familiar, Carad turned to Eadyan and said, "Keep everyone here and stay silent. We'll be back once we secure our rear. But if anything happens, follow Scree," as he pointed to his owl. "He'll bring you safely to the keep." Turning to Scree, he commanded, "Keep a lookout. If they...

D&D 5E [IC] hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen

Thanks, forgot about that. I think once Carad casts the spell, he doesn't need to stay within 30 ft but with the duration of only 1 minute, it would be tricky to keep running back and forth to recast the spell. I think we might have to take the risk of leaving the townfolk for a while, if the...

D&D 5E [IC] hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen

I think it's fine for Carad to remain outside. My thought is that Venn and Jeni quickly get inside (two rounds worth of dash sufficient?) and close the door. Carad needs to see the door from outside to create the illusion anyway. So, while hiding behind the low wall, he would cast the Silent...

D&D 5E [IC] hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen

Assuming that someone shakes Carad out from his stupor. :) Upon being shaken, Carad blinked hard a few times as he reoriented himself to his immediate surroundings. Finding a number of berries in his hand, he nodded his thanks silently to Jeni and started popping them in his mouth. "We'll do...

D&D 5E hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen (full)

My worry about the plan is that if the roving party sees through Carad's illusion, or if they hear the sounds of battle, or if the northern party sends word to them, they would attack through the south door. Then our party and the refugees would be trapped. We would have to try to hold the south...

D&D 5E [IC] hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen

Yes, that was Carad's intention - to hug the south wall of the temple, but the outcomes is pretty much the same either way, so we'll take it from there. :) Carad leapt over the low wall for the second time that night and dashed to the door. On Morgan's query, Carad's senses retreated from...

And now for something completely unrelated to our strategising, a test on how well you know your D&D 5E rules! http://www.sageadvice.eu/dungeons-dragons-trivia-quiz/

D&D 5E hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen (full)

Haha, yes. Maybe Carad should take the Lucky feat at level 4 to mitigate. ;) I think if the door comes down too early, we won't be able to get our original plan in motion, i.e. creating illusion at back door to fool the roving team, while we take out the group at the front door. In fact, the...

D&D 5E hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen (full)

Yup! Read the HotDQ was designed while the rules was still being put together, and so some of the encounters are quite imbalanced. Sigh, looks like Carad has been jinxed with a bad dice. Just accumulating fumble rolls here... Need to do some dice shaming soon.

D&D 5E [IC] hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen

Actually, Carad attacked the kobold, but I think he missed anyway. Besides, Venn has obliterated him. :) Gritting his teeth to focus past the pain, Carad stabbed again at the cultist. He then bent to pick up his bow before retreating along the temple's southern wall, peeking out along the...

@Steve Gorak, thanks! Jeni and Venn really rocking their disadvantage rolls. Keep it up! :)

D&D 5E [IC] hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen

Much as Carad dreaded close combat, he knew that speed was critical at this time. He dashed forward, pushing his body through the fey and back to stretch thin the distance intervening, weaving past Morgan, Hunter and the cultist (to square N8). Dropping his bow and pulling out his rapier, he...

D&D 5E hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen (full)

Carad would fire his bow at one of the targets not obscured by the smoke, preferably a cultist, hoping that his sneak attack would be enough to take one out. He would then take cunning action to hide behind the wall. Initiative: [roll0] Attack: [roll1] Attack w Adv: [roll2] Damage (arrow)...

D&D 5E hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen (full)

Yes, that's one of the frustrating part I've found about 5E sometimes - the vagueness of the mechanics of hiding, surprise, visibility, stealth, etc. But on the other hand, I also like it because it just boils down to common sense, which trumps mechanics any day. :)

D&D 5E hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen (full)

Yes, sounds good. Let's do it! Forged Fury, my take on the "unseen" and "surprise" issue is that if the target doesn't know that it is being attacked (i.e. surprised), it also didn't see the attacker, and hence, the attacker was unseen. How's that logic? :)

D&D 5E hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen (full)

Hmm, thanks. In other words, for ranged attacks, with the low visibility, it would be disadvantage but with advantage from the surprise, it nets to normal attack. But for melee, there would be no disadvantage due to visibility, and hence a net advantage (if the attacker can get within melee...

D&D 5E hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen (full)

Yes, I think for surprise, you can still take your full range of activities, i.e. in this case Morgan and Hunter could move 30ft then throw the javelin within range, so no disadvantage. Yes, let's go for it!

D&D 5E hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen (full)

To add on to my previous post, instead of creating illusion of a bonfire, Carad could create an illusion of billowing thick smoke of up to 15ft x 15ft blocking the doorway. The current 6 are already making lots of that, so the roving team won't find it suspicious that there's even more smoke...

D&D 5E hafrogman's Hoard of the Dragon Queen (full)

Carad has silent image which he can still cast twice. So possible to do the fire idea. However even if we create the illusory fire the roving group will wonder where the south group went. Also illusory fire has no heat and that might make them suspicious when they are walking by especially if it...
