D&D 4E Should 4e martial artists have "monk" flavor?

This is another reason I like the swordsage so much more than the monk. The aikido-esque Setting Sun maneuvers make the whole unarmed thing a lot more plausible than the PHB monk's "fists like axes and skin like armor" shtick. I mean, yeah, in real life using judo against a swordsman when...

D&D 4E Should 4e martial artists have "monk" flavor?

I dunno about full, but yeah. The mace thing is just D&D, except it's not really part of D&D anymore, so... dunno where I was going with that one. I should have said armored, spellcasting priests. ^_^

Wizards still cast Enchantment, Illusions, Necromancy

I really, really hope they aren't. Saddling illusion mages with musical crap would be a horrible thing to do.

D&D 4E Should 4e martial artists have "monk" flavor?

Armored mace-wielding priests, sorcerers who aren't evil, and tall but poncy elves are all worse fits for western medieval fantasy than a fistfighter.

D&D 4E Should 4e martial artists have "monk" flavor?

Oh, I agree. I wasn't saying there should be separate classes for each thing, necessarily. I just want to be able to play each of those concepts in some way. (The way I'd do things is to have fist-fighting options for fighters that are competitive with their weapon options, and then a...

D&D 4E Should 4e martial artists have "monk" flavor?

I'd like to see the ascetic flavor divorced from the bare-knuckle fighting. I should be able to play a non-ascetic fistfighter or a monastic swordsman just as well. (Book of Nine Swords gave us the latter with the swordsage class, at least.)

D&D 4E What D&D 4e Should Learn From World of Warcraft

And female dwarves, but it looks like 4e picked up on that one already. :)

Dragonborn - will you ban them?

I think elves and dwarves are more high fantasy. Dragonborn and tieflings make me think of sword-and-sorcery.

    Cleric magic: spells or prayers?

I hope they pick one and stick with it. Clerical/druidic/etc magic has always been this weird wavering between religious magic and direct invocation. I'd personally prefer the former, but a solid stance on either would be nice.

Working on a class to match a character concept

I think you're misunderstanding his goals. He's not avoiding classes like fighter or wizard because he sees them as "not knowledge-guy enough", he's avoiding them because his concept does not include being a skilled swordsman or a powerful mage. He specifically wants to play someone who is...

R&C Art, the Women of R&C

They're both. Where do people get their ideas about gender roles? How do cultural ideas and values transmit themselves from one generation to the next? The stories we tell our children are a major part of it. It's rarely a bad idea to think about what messages one might be giving one's...

D&D 4E 4e Wizards - No More Necromancers, Enchanters, Summoners???

I hope they take the beguiler and improve on it. Possibly with talent trees or other customization options that make it more of an illusionist or an enchanter as the player desires. But I really liked how the beguiler had not only illusions, but a whole suite of magic based on trickery and...

D&D 4E 4e Wizards - No More Necromancers, Enchanters, Summoners???

Per-encounter is a different kind of resource management than per-day, though. With a per-encounter ability, you ask yourself "is now the best time during this fight to use this resource?" With a per-day ability, you have to consider whether it's worth using the resource at all during this...

Working on a class to match a character concept

Archivist is a lot like cloistered cleric, only better. Dark knowledge is perfect for this concept. It's still kinda magic-oriented, and you might not like the religious angle, but I think it's about as good as you're going to get. Actually, the religious fluff could probably just be ignored...

I thought it was only clerics that are losing summoning.

R&C Art, the Women of R&C

A woman from a culture like that wouldn't wear a mail bikini. She'd probably wear skimpy clothing made of something lighter, like cloth or leather. And it wouldn't be a bikini, though it might have roughly similar coverage. And Aloisius is completely correct in that only sexually-repressed...

    D&D 4E 4E -- More or Less Vancian?

Spell memorization plays a large role in the Turjan stories, particularly the one with Mazirian. The reason I say 4e will be more Vancian is that Vance's wizards could only memorize a handful of extremely powerful spells, and for the most part relied on magic items and mundane skills to see...

    D&D 4E 4E -- More or Less Vancian?

I think 4e magic will be more "Vancian" than any prior edition of D&D magic. Gygaxian magic is not much at all like Vance's. :P
