    Post Your Gaming Setup

We're pretty low tech since we play at the same house every session, but have to knock everything down and put it away afterward. 2 six foot plastic tables stuck together gives us a big square. As the DM, I get one side to myself, and the players situate themselves around the table. Strangely...

DM's, when do you prepare for your game?

We play every other week. So I tend to dream stuff up for the first 10 days and then put off writing stuff up until 2 days before. Then tweak it before I print it out. The Monster Builder really makes it much easier to build what I want. This week, I wanted some Fomorians, but they were too...

Is it ever a good idea to hit the party?

This is common in my game. Both the Rogue and Fighter have taken friendly fire on numerous occasions. Hell, there have been a few nights the fighter took more damage from the Wizard than from anything it fought. For a while, the wizard would joke, Dragonborns(our fighter) are the easiest...

    DM'ing questions

    1. We usually play from 8pm - 1 or 2am, so 5 or 6 hours. Typically, we'll hit 4 encounters. Sometimes only 3, sometimes 5. I usually prepare 5, just to be safe. 2. When we started, myself(DM), and one of the other players did a bunch of encounters are lunch(we worked together). Then on...

    I need a McGuffin

I would have the Stone Giants request the recovery of an artifact, Headdress of <insert name>, for example. This would set off a race between the party and the hobgoblins. You could do all sorts of fun things depending which group was in the lead, and finish with a big showdown in the chamber...

Letter signed Idea stolen Way cool.

    dungeon crafting software

I tried several packages, including campaign cartographer. In the end, I settled on Dundjinni. It was just easier for me to "get". You can download a free demo from their site. It doesn't include all the art and save/print are disabled. But you would at least learn if you liked it...

    DM Screen Dilemma

I picked up the 4e screen when it first came out. Used it for less than half a session. I agree with several people, it just got in the way. In the end, I just don't use one and don't bother to hide my stuff. We are all there to have fun. If a player needs to "cheat" and look at my sheet...

    Skill Challenge Design Help

I do the handout as well. Not nearly as nice as the one posted above. But I do include the DCs and Primary/Secondary skills, etc. I also make mention that they can suggest and use any skill they want as long as it is relevant. We've probably run 8 or 10 so far. Some good, some not so good...

    Gamer ADD

We've done that in the past as well, run a delve when someone can't make it. That has been the most enjoyable since we can get our fix, and try something new(and someone else can DM). We usually play every 2 weeks and have been pretty fortunate to keep that schedule, despite having adult lives.

    Gamer ADD

We refer to it as "Bright Shiny Object Syndrome". Have to go chase the new shiny ball. I haven't had it recently, but I know everytime my players look at the PH2, they all want to start over again with new characters. We will occasionally run a delve night, instead of our regular campaign...

    Challenge my players!

My gang hasn't reached that level yet, but when I want to push them, I put them in a situation where an extended rest isn't possible. For instance, they had to help retake a city. There was a list of 8 tasks(what was I thinking) that they had to accomplish before the end of the night. By the...

Where to find puzzles for dungeons?

I love using chess boards. My personal favorite, also stolen from the 7th guest was placing 8 of each piece on without threatening another. So place 8 rooks on the board so they cannot attack each other. Easy, put them on a diagonal. The Bishops, in a straight line. The knights are fairly...

    Gaming Terrain, Tiles, and Battlemats

We spent our first year using a gridded whiteboard. But it felt...uninspired. The rooms really didn't have any flavor. I tried several products including Campaign Cartographer and the Dungeon Tiles. In the end, I've settled on Dundjinni. I can draw stuff up relatively easily and add some...

Adventure Suggestions for 4-5th Level Party

If you're up for doing a conversion, X2 Castle Amber, was one my group particularly enjoyed.

    Skill Challenge Play Examples?

We have recently, after almost a year, added skill challenges in. Like someone else said, battle after battle can get boring. It hasn't been a total success or failure. A couple tips. The session before I put one in for the first time, I read a whole lot about it and informed the players...

Need some tech in my campaign (Esp. a map editor)

For mapping, I prefer Dundjinni. I've tried several and found this to my liking. It is just easy to use. The other tool that has completely changed my prep is the monster builder. And it has only been out a week. You'll need a DDI subscription, but the ability to look up any monster and then...

    Game night cancelled

My group has been playing every other Wednesday for a year(this past wednesday was the anniversary!). I can't say we've canceled, but we have rescheduled/shifted to another non-play wednesday. It is an interesting phenomenon. Monday on game week, the emails start up, I work with a couple of...

    Converting 2e and 1e adventures

A couple months after 4E came out, my party had progressed to the point where I felt I could run them through X2, Castle Amber. Not truly a 1e or 2e module, but close enough. A couple things to keep in mind. Keep the spirit of the module. A great example of this is a ghostly banquet early in...

    Moments in DM'ing

I have 2 great DM moments and a what the ?!?! player one. This group is made up of old school gamers who hadn't played in years. I dragged them all in when 4e came out. The second night we played, we got to the magic gem they were supposed to recover and without hesitation, the warlock I...
