Telegaming- 5 Locals and a guy from Arizona

I have one player who travels a lot. So we've been working through this for a while. You're already doing the hardest part, using maptools. We ran through a bunch of audio options at the start. I now have a star phone for gaming and it is far better than any other option, and we tried many...

How long, in real time, would you expect a campaign from 1-30 to take?

We wrapped up our 4E campaign two days ago. Level 1 through 30, but I won't lie, epic didn't agree with us a whole lot, so I leveled them up at an accelerated rate. It took us 3.5 years of playing every other week for 5 hours. I suspect if we had played epic out entirely, another 6-12 months.

    Epic Final Battle

Thanks everyone, it was very satisfying for me as the DM to put something this challenging together. Up till now I had had issues with challenging them at epic level, so this was definitely an excellent encounter. I said it before, but there were 2 very key factors. Certainly, taking them...

    Epic Final Battle

This is going to be a fairly lengthy post, detailing the final encounter of a level 30 epic campaign against Vecna. We've been playing for 3.5 years. The group consists of a Rogue, Fighter, Warlord, Wizard, and Cleric. They have played these characters since level 1. Epic play did not suit...

D&D 1E Thinking of bringing my 1e AD&D DMG to my 4e game.

After the article a couple weeks ago about the top 10 books a geek should read, I dug up my AD&D DMG and have been looking through it. Reading it cover to cover might cause me to go insane with all the Gygaxian prose, etc. But there is an AMAZING amount of content in that book. The...

    Your approach to session planning?

I stopped running around the room screaming because my wife complained about it. Now I sit at the laptop and bang my head on the table. Seriously, my players like to be led around a bit, so it makes it easier for me to prep, particularly encounters. I usually try to sit down 3 or 4 days...

    Help with retro 1E game...

Make sure you have the players keep/make their own map. If they're any good at it, I suggest one way walls, shifting doors. Mess with them.

    I'm on a [map]quest...

Maptools has a fairly large art pack you can download. I have it and there is art for all kinds of genres. Here is a link to a post about it: MapTool resources - Giant in the Playground Forums That happens to link to a torrent of it, so you'll need to be familiar with bittorrent to get it...

    Challenging an Epic Party

So after 3.5 years, countless adventures, and far too much time in analysis paralysis about combat, my 4e campaign will wrap up in 2 sessions with a confrontation with Vecna. I've got a party of 5, with immense synergy. I have barely been able to challenge them through the epic tier and I want...

Merric's Erratically Updated Reviews of old D&D adventures

Thanks for the flashbacks. With my 4e campaign wrapping up in a couple sessions, the interest has been in AD&D and playing/running these classic modules. Now my appetite is beyond wet...I'm drooling to play them all.

    Best Mapmaking software

No love for maptools yet? I moved to it from Dunjinni. Being a virtual table top, you can place tokens, do lighting, all of that jazz. On top of that, it's java based so it should run natively on the Mac.

The Slow Death of Epic Tier

I wish I had them. My guys are due to face Vecna in a few sessions and unless I take him way over the top, they will trounce right through him. I dread this encounter because as the end of the campaign, I don't want them to cruise through it, but at the same time, epic is extremely hard to...

    Evil DM Moments

Not that evil, but very torturous to my players. They found an ancient monastery, populated by vampires. The vampires told the players they were not evil and during the course of 2-3 sessions, it drove the players up the wall. They kept waiting for the other foot to drop. For the vampires to...

    She's one of us

That was the plan. And even worse, they need him to turn the pegasi back into princesses. His terms will be his safe release. I'm curious how my 8 year old will deal with that decision.

Now this is an Epic Battle

I've found this can be handled in one of 2 ways. Each level is it's own map, but changing back and forth can be problematic. What I'll do is draw the next level near the first, and then use fog of war to hide it so they don't see what they shouldn't. Maptools is great, until you want to add a...

    She's one of us

My eight year old is still sulking about because she didn't get to kill the evil wizard. She's taking it a little personally. I guess I'm going to have to get another session together soon. What I really need is to get a couple of her friends over for a session, and hook them!

Now this is an Epic Battle

We play every other week, so I'll try to remember to come back and update this thread for those that are interested. If I have time tonight, I'll clean up the maps and post them. One of the players specifically said, after seeing the size..."Now that's epic!"

Now this is an Epic Battle

They still have plenty in reserve, most have action points, there is still some healing around, and many dailies remain. That being said, I've hammered them pretty good and expect to push them harder in 2 weeks when we meet again. We will be going to level 30, but I after this beating, I will...

    She's one of us

The session was last night and everyone had a blast. I don't make my regular players roll up a character or anything, it's more of a chance for them to work on their RPing and descriptions. I did present my daughter with a new set of dice at the start of the session as a birthday gift...

Now this is an Epic Battle

Last night, we continued fighting an epic battle(27th level pcs) that started 2 sessions ago. So far this encounter has lasted over 8 hours, and no one shows signs of being bored with it. I'm rather proud, so I'm sharing some details. The characters are after the Heart of Vecna, in...
