    The Story Now Discussion

Re-reading what I just wrote, I think I could have been even clearer, as regards how any of this fits in with your questions. In particular, your hitpoint comparison got me to thinking about the actual mechanics involved and how they are interpreted and interact. In a traditional Mystery, it...

Don't worry - there was no apology coming. (Just assuming I'm going to apologize and then nobly absolving me of the need to do it? Wow... just, wow... No, not elitist, at all...) Right. Second try. I do think you've made your questions much clearer this time, but I think they demonstrate that...

Good point. He doesn't quite fit in with the others, in that regard. There is sort of sub-genre of mystery where, as a viewer/reader, you're not trying to figure out a solution (you may even have been given it, already) but how our hero will figure it out. I guess that doesn't really translate...

Well, I can't answer the first one, because I can't even figure out what you're getting at (the odd use of parentheses may not be helping). BTW, a piece of objective advice from someone who has been reading related posts (which far too often devolve into arguments), on these forums, for a while...

Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Sherlock Holmes, Murder She Wrote, Castle, Columbo, etc. etc. ad nauseum. Honestly, I didn't think I was being that vague....

    The Story Now Discussion

Okay, this is more what I'm getting at. Unfortunately, what you are describing is pretty much exactly the way I was doing it, when I was doing what I called improv mysteries (I didn't even know about Story Now, then), and, while it did work, it was kind of lacking, compared to the planned ones...

Exactly. Thank you. There's the standard RPG problem-solving that leads to mysterious questions. That's not what I'm talking about. Then, there's the traditional Mystery genre, which fills many book shelves and shows up in many television shows. That is what I'm talking about.

Manbearcat: I won't quote both your last two posts, because... well... the first one is super long. But rest assured that does not mean I did not read them, beginning to end, and give them a lot of thought! 😊 I do think, though, that, as with Ovinomancer and Campbell, you may have at least...

I think we're on the same page, with the superhero stuff. If it didn't look like that, then it may have been bad wording, on my part. I kind of jokingly tossed off my "what are you doing today? " comment, which, admittedly, implies an answer that is a solid plan. And, sometimes, that is how it...

OK, but that's just the "I wonder where the werewolf is hiding" kind of "mystery" I mentioned in my post. That's not a mystery-focused whodunnit kind of thing, which is what I'm interested in, here. Your answer seems to be "no, Story Now isn't meant for this"....?

    The Story Now Discussion

I just wanted to pop in and say "thank you" for some of these posts (especially, Hawkeyefan's, which really brought things home, for me) and to Arilyn, for starting the thread, in the first place. While I have only rarely made my presence known, in the other Story Now discussions, I've been a...

Although I still have some old Dragon-related correspondence, conducted with Roger, I never really knew him that well, since he was becoming more a fixture at TSR at around the same time that I was starting to write more for other magazines/companies. I do know that Hasbro let him go around...

That's cool! Now, someone just has to pick up Snit's Revenge and Mertwig's Maze. I have all three of these, in original form, but they are in... shall we say... less than mint condition... Hey, you can tell how loved a game is by how battered it is.

Sadly, I don't think so. I believe Steve Jackson Games picked it up... very late 80s? Early 90s? But I'm pretty sure it has been out of print, for a while, now. Having said that, there may still be a Pocket Box version, floating around. You'd have to check SJG for that.

My thoughts, as well. The old Dragon may be long gone, but the spirit it helped create is alive and well.

Cheaper, if you had a subscription. But niche hobby magazines are always pricey. That hasn't actually changed much. Some of the art magazine and such that I glance at, these days, are $7 - 9. But, again, cheaper with a subscription. Also, keep in mind that all rpg stuff was pricey, when it was...

Yup, me too. It really was a great magazine, and it led me down so many interesting rabbit holes. I also "met" (in the correspondence sense) a lot of interesting people, connected to the industry, at the time, so that was cool. That was a great time to be neck-deep in the hobby. Not to sound...
