Help me a little with a character backstory...

Quick note: if you intend to play an Exalted character, you aren't going to get away with "the ends justified the means". Bruce Wayne is a poor role model - you need to be more like Billy Batson.

    Best source for a non-LA PC-playable minotaur?

Ah. I was going to suggest stretching the Savage Species monster class out to ten levels (hence, a HD at every level) or maybe even twenty level (though this would require filling out the top end). You're sure race-as-class isn't going to work?

D&D - Mediaval Social, Political & Economical Structure.

Ah. Good. Over to "if you disagree with me, you're a conspiracy theorist". Well, that's a step up from idiot, so thank you! But seriously, there is evidence that prehistoric peoples had a social organization lying outside of a straight line between chimpanzees and ancient Greeks. Field...

    Making an RPG. Any Advice?

The mechanics cannot be part of an IP. What's owned is the method of describing them. If I have a novel way of describing the way that the d20 system carries out action resolution, I can appropriate that description (or put it under a share-alike/attribution license, for that matter).

    Making an RPG. Any Advice?

Why the OGL? As far as I know, there isn't a Copyleft D&D Clone. Making a game outside of the OGL (using a creative commons share-alike/attribution license) would give you a unique marketing profile. Wizards did quite well out of playing on what people hoped Open Gaming would be - if you...

D&D - Mediaval Social, Political & Economical Structure.

I have no idea how sturdy you are personally. My remarks are directly purely at the arguments you've advanced. On the same line, you seem to have a superior knowledge as to the breadth of my education than I do myself. As this is a matter of some concern to me, perhaps you could offer some...

D&D - Mediaval Social, Political & Economical Structure.

:) You know that Karl Marx, the famous historical determinist, also believed that "the choices people make influence the structure of society that develops", right? But now I see what you mean. This is completely superficial. X happened because X happened, which "ultimately" means that...

suggestions needed! - minimize "stuff" that i have to bring for dm'ing each session

Just a note on terminology: old school D&D players were mostly born in the 70s or later. They're not a generation alienated from computers. IIRC, Dragon was quick to run articles (perhaps even a regular column) covering the possibilities of computer aids for the game. Arguably, it's the...

Warhammer 40k fans must be more grown up than the rest of us.

Brevity - a kind of review

For me, using one's legs to maintain a grapple would probably be a -2 to Grapple checks, -2 (i.e. 2 better than otherwise) to main hand actions situation. I don't like telling a player, "you can do that but it doesn't mean anything". OK, that's not entirely true. For example, when players...

How many character classes do you need, anyway?

From a purely gamist point of view, that's only true if you're doing it wrong. Dealing damage is something that "tank" and "skill specialist" do while trying to feel important. Healing is something that the support staff do when the nagging grows incessant. The wizard is busy doing control...

    Searching for "New School" elements

Uh. Yeah. I agree with Raven Crowking. (Slightly surprising, given our recent disagreements about meaning!) I would add (and this is controversial) that a more precise definition of "Old School" than "stuff liked by readers of Grognardia" is possible. However, something like that is a good...

Is "skilled guy" a good character class?

Note that this is something of a design problem. Not in the sense that my pc should have a chance of beating up your pc, but in the sense that "heroic fighting man vs. evil wizard" is meant to be part of the genre.

Brevity - a kind of review

Well, I don't have too much to add. My basic solution is to introduce "contested combat maneuvers", and suggest that grappling is one instance of this. Rather than giving a list of things you can and can't do in a grapple, just write a guideline for the ref on what kinds of things would be...

    Searching for "New School" elements

Firstly, you have to understand that Bullgrit has been flogging the "nobody even knows what these terms mean!" horse for some time. (Whether this is trolling or not is a question for the moderators.) That there is an old school movement, with substantial agreement about the kind of thing...

Is "skilled guy" a good character class?

Baden-Powell was 100% prepared, 24/7, long before Batman was invented. Additionally, we can estimate B-P's minimum level more easily. Around 1909, he was in epic levels, with a leadership score of 40 (with both Epic Leadership and Legendary Commander). Given that B-P didn't have access to...

Is "skilled guy" a good character class?

I agree with the guts of your position. This is not a PvP game. However, the original paradigm was that fighters would be up front taking and dealing damage, and wizards would be in the back casting fireball, when the party got into a fight they couldn't avoid. Otherwise, everyone would be...

    need a new character idea

Roll 4d6 six times, in order Strength-Intelligence-Dexterity-Wisdom-Constitution-Charisma. Look at the result and figure out what would make best use of those stats. (Even if you're using elite array or a point buy, this is still a good method of working out what to play.)
