    Being non-judgmental about play styles

"Best convey"? What does that even mean in this context? How can one method of conveying thought be better than another?

    Searching for "New School" elements

Maybe "For me, there is a difference" wasn't sufficiently clear? :) Just so we're on the same page, I wasn't trying to dodge the burden of proof for my side of the argument. (Actually - our side of the argument, as you and I agree in this thread.) Rather, I was saying that the other side...

    DM Issues: Railroading

I'm trying to coin it as a term of art. ;) Glad to see that it's fairly easy to understand! I don't think there's a blanket answer to that one. In the heroic adventure genre that D&D dominates, you don't really need major world events (those that you do need, the players will create or...

    Being non-judgmental about play styles

They're statements of a different kind. My dislike of strawberries doesn't typically convey any advice to you not to eat them. Indeed, it's routine to say things like, "I don't like strawberries, but you might." If I say Tom's a problem player, I am at least giving you a warning that he could...

    DM Issues: Railroading

As far as I can tell, we agree about "railroading". For the rest: I'm not arguing against consequences. My sensible version of the storm example has consequences for the players decision to stay in a makeshift shelter. The debate is over scripting, with particularly emphasis on what that...

    DM Issues: Railroading

We all owe Gary XP for this carry-on. :( I'm pretty sure this is a style debate, and the sides correspond roughly to New School and Old School. So, if Hickman had just given the players cool powers and advised the ref with something like, "you should be guided by the dice, not mastered by...

    Being non-judgmental about play styles

This is closer. Actually, I rolled out the flip reply because you clearly don't always talk about the paladin's mount as a "pokemount". :) As regards this term, I'm not so sure about the linguistic practices. It used to have a definite meaning for a certain ref tactic (overuse of which was...

Yes. Any creature would know its place when mounted by a Beardfist Warrior. So, Rogue - Trainer, are you happy with your answer? :D

What Might An Urban Kingmaker Look Like?

If I was going to write an Urban version of Kingmaker, I would make sure to drop the term "sandbox" into the module description fairly regularly. I've only had a quick look at Kingmaker, but the repeated use of the term "sandbox" arouses suspicion. From a brief analysis, it seems that the...

    Schooling Classic and Modern Adventures

I know you want people to stop calling you New School. I also know that you wish the Old School had never happened. But objective reality doesn't bow to our wishes in that way.

Zebras? What? Oh, yeah, they're in the photo, too, but I was really trying to provide you with some Beardly Inspiration. I would caption the picture: "Fellow of the Barbate Society."

    Searching for "New School" elements

I have no idea what this has to do with the school discussion, and suspect that other posters would be similarly confused. Would you please clarify your contribution?

    Searching for "New School" elements

That's a straw man. Nobody is claiming that Hickman conjured up railroading from some nether pit and unleashed it upon the hobby. (Though now that I've brought this up, a light-hearted adventure based on such an event has potential.) The terms just denote changes in the D&D paradigm...

    Searching for "New School" elements

OK. Here's an attempt to frame the discussion, and to incorporate some insights from a parallel thread. 1. Is there a difference between the "Old School" and the "New School"? The burden of proof is on the affirmative. Those that don't think there is a difference essentially can't prove...

    Shield Name?

How about "Keith"? It's a nice name. Simple, the sort of thing one can slip into battle banter ("You'll have to to better to get a blow past Keith the Shield!") or cry out in anguish ("KEEEEEIITH!!!").

    D&D 3E/3.5 3e multiclassing on 4e math

I think my italics went wide. :) Thanks for the explanation of your distinction between "build" and "pick". I think it's a useful way of thinking about characters. My term "develop" isn't so helpful. What I'm opposed to is something shared by 3.X and 4e - that a player can sit down and draw...

Supplement that focuses on the Social aspect of the game?

I don't know of the book you seek. My advice, however, is this: if you have players who really love that stuff, they probably want to be judged on their performance, not on their dice roll. If you have players who don't like that stuff, they probably don't want it to be the focus of the game.
