Prose, Terminology, Fluff, & Presentation: Spreadsheets or Haiku?

I'm split on opinion here - when I first picked up the 4E books, I struggled to get a handle on the world. I had played the 40k RPGs, and knew the background for that world, and found it easy to sit down and get into making a character. When I first picked up 4E D&D, the lack of setting...

Edinburgh, Scotland - Player needed for ongoing 4th Ed game

Hey, I'm sure it's only an 8 or 9 hour flight - you could do that there and back once a fortnight, surely? :p

WotC to publish D&D PDFs again?

I like the app store idea for plug in/module stuff - but I'd like to go a bit further. I'd like to see WotC go down the API route in the same way that CCP does with Eve Online character data. Pay a monthly sub that gives you access to an API key that gives access to the game data (WotC can do...

This spot is still open if anyone is interested :)

How Do you Feel About Healing Surges? (Read First!)

But the character is dying or unconscious (depending on terminology used in your edition)... they're not really in a position to decide they need to pull themselves together. I get that you're probably talking on general principle rather than for the particular case of a character of a character...

How Do you Feel About Healing Surges? (Read First!)

Can you clarify this part for me? If you're at 0 Hit Points, you can't just 'pop a healing surge' without outside intervention unless you roll a 20+ (modified by certain feats etc) on your death save. I think I've seen it happen twice in all my time playing 4th Ed, and my players get knocked out...

On 5E Skills (aka How Game System Affects Immersion)

I agree with most of this - it's become a bit of an inside joke at one of my games. We don't look around, we "perception-ise", along with other things... I don't really try to get around it other than with social encounters - I've made it clear to players that they'll get bonuses to their...

    Alignment restrictions?

No to restrictions, and an additional no to any mechanics/class features which use them by default. The idea that you can reduce anyone's beliefs or behaviours to a 3/5/9 point system seems very odd for me, and it doesn't feature in my games (If anyone directly asks, I'll tell them most of my...

    D&D 4E The Dispensible 4E

A few of big ones for me personally: - reduce out of sequence actions in combat. The number of reaction and interrupt actions gets crazy sometimes. - reduce the number of "until end of next turn" bonus/debuffs. I'm in two minds about this one, because they're a big way 4e actually promotes...

How Do you Feel About Healing Surges? (Read First!)

I like both aspects of them - the surge value (Especially that it isn't fixed at -/4 hp - you can invest in improving it...). Max healing/day for each character without pulling something special out also appeals to me. If healing spells go back to being daily rather than per encounter stuff...

How martial should the Cleric be?

Those type of clerics could exist, but they're probably not out adventuring in dungeons. Or if they did, without any kind of adventuring abilities they wouldn't last long, so why put them in a game which is often about going into Dungeons and/or fighting Dragons? About martial vs. caster...

Public D&D Playtests To Begin On May 24th

Delighted to hear that the play test is coming soon - assuming this'll be them putting the starter rules on the website to use at home, I'll give myself a couple of weeks to digest whatever they put up then look at running a game for one of my regular groups... one has a mix of people who...

Edinburgh, Scotland - Player needed for ongoing 4th Ed game

Evening all, We have a spot for 1 player to join us in an ongoing 4th Ed D&D campaign which has been run for a year now. We're currently playing fortnightly Saturday afternoons in a nice cafe in town. The group is currently level 6, so you'd be joining with a character at that level. Some...

Why is the Vancian system still so popular?

I think part of the issue stems from players feeling the need to "beat" the GMs adventure (and assume that killing everything is the way to beat it) - might be that there was valuable information that he had put in that tower to actually keep the game going beyond that one session. Might be...

To grid or not to grid. New staff blog . April 11

As a DM, I always use grids at the moment... mostly because I DM 4E, and as everyone has said, they're pretty much obligatory. If I was running Pathfinder, I'd probably still use at least a map to lay out positions, even if I wasn't using it strictly to scale. For other systems as a player...

    D&D 4E My 4e House Rules - Yours?

Ah, now that makes sense, and is something I've thought about doing myself... giving people more chances to put together epic turns is always a winner (except for the bad guys, of course...)

    D&D 4E My 4e House Rules - Yours?

Isn't this a standard rule? Or do you mean you change it to allow more than one? (unless I made rule that up and need to apologise to my players next week for enforcing it..)

Suggest Your "Rule of Three" Questions for Next Week (4/17)

One of the big problems with both 3/3.5 and 4E is combat reallly bogging down at high levels... any specific plans to keep things running smoothly? Subquestion - will high level play be included in the public playtest?

    D&D 5E D&D Next Blog: Beyond Class & Race

Isn't this just a terminology dislike then? You don't like it as it has the name of a feature you currently like in 4E? Not saying the term is right/wrong/good/bad, but using the word Theme for this doesn't preclude there being something that serves an equivalent funtion to the 4E Themes...

    D&D 5E D&D Next Blog: Beyond Class & Race

And could reduce the need for Wizards to have 917 seperate sub-classes and builds (I think that's about right at last count), which would also be awesome.
