D&D 4E What do you like about 4e healing?

Most of the features of 4E's healing are good. The major problems I have with 4E healing is: -It's unusual how after-battle healing works, and I really despise how players end a fight and then want to use the Leader's healing powers to boost surges. -I would like a somewhat grittier system...

The Mind of Fantasy - not the Sci-onics of the Mind

Psionics is just another system of magic, typically with another mechanics system behind it. I don't see psionics fitting in with medieval-themed campaigns, as anything that performs magical effects in a medieval setting would be termed generically "magic" or "sorcery." The term psionics implies...

Sorcerer: the only class I'm worried about (and how I'd make it)

To be honest I don't see any need for a Sorcerer distinct from a Warlock, given that a Sorcerer's power ostensibly derives from heritage from a supernatural being and a Warlock's power can arise from ... a pact with or heritage from a supernatural being. Although you could just roll the Warlock...

    A Better Monster Manuel

The Monster Vault: Threats to the Nentir Vale was a really cool book that fleshed out the game setting and really gave me a ton of ideas for adventures and how I could utilize the monsters presented in my campaign. I'd definitely be up for seeing more of that style. As a small note: I really...

    Is math a flaw?

I think you could possibly get away with it if you also include a free phone & tablet app with your game that handles all the calculations.

What kind of New Setting for Fifth Edition? (Other than old settings)

How about a low-fantasy setting based on say, George R. R. Martin novels, or historical fantasy such as King Arthur.

    Ebook Support

Due to the restrictions on this platform, namely not being able to transfer your work to another platform should Apple decide not to publish your work, it's probably better to use other equivalent software.

    Level of Play

Levels 1-5 are typically the sweet spot in terms of playing the game without number inflation overwhelming the D20 mechanic. Higher levels introduce a lot of options that slow down the game and lead to too much accounting and rules focus. It's also a big narrative and world building hurdle to...

A sacred cow to slay: starting at 1st level

I'm having trouble understanding exactly what OP is getting at, but I'm going to take a stab at a response. I feel like this is purely an issue from your vision of your setting contradicting the implied setting of D&D. I see no problem with say (3E), your peasant being a level 1 character, the...

    Should races have mechanical effects?

I'm generally in favor of more importance being given to race choice. I feel like race should be a feature that is suffused throughout the entire play experience of a character and not just a thin-veneer manifested as a lone power or stat bonus. However that's a personal choice in how I want my...

Of all the complaints about 3.x systems... do you people actually allow this stuff ?

3E in general is a lot more binary than 4E, and resting up has stronger and more versatile benefits. If a couple of players take more damage in a fight than they're comfortable with, or the Cleric and Wizard blow powerful spell slots and want to rest (or feel like their prepared spells are not...

Of all the complaints about 3.x systems... do you people actually allow this stuff ?

The statement about building up trust with your players is not a version-specific one. However it is pretty obvious that 3rd Edition has a lot more built-in ways for a party to exploit resting, and more incentives to do so.

Of all the complaints about 3.x systems... do you people actually allow this stuff ?

20 minute adventuring days? Sure. That's a problem I definitely had in 3rd Edition. Why wouldn't you do it, with the way spellcasting works. And constantly coming up with some kind of rationale for why players can't do it is impractical. In 4th Edition there are times when my players will go...

    Question Regarding Power

Hey Guys, I've got a bit of a rules issue that I wanted a second/third/etc opinion on. One of the players in my campaign has the Hunter Power Stalker's Mist. This particular power creates a zone of heavily obscured squares granting full concealment. My question is: How should this work? I ask...

    Are feats the problem?

Honestly I'd probably say that "Levelling" is more of the problem than "Feats" although the two are clearly intertwined. (And maybe at its core this is an issue with desires and expectations of people at the table.) At least in my own personal experience, 4e makes this more obvious, as you gain...

WotC's hesitation on tackling the feat tax.

I'm coming late into this conversation, but can someone explain to me what justifies bumping up player attack bonuses and defenses? Specifically, why is this a good thing for "the math of the game" (or however you'd like to phrase it). I ask this as a DM who wants to keep the players in his...

    New Power Source

Absolutely. The only reason to introduce new power sources at this point is to introduce new mechanics. "Time" power source could easily be explained as "Arcane." Same with "Elemental." Heck even "Psionics" could be "Arcane," but it's differentiated by having unique mechanics.

    The incredible shrinking stat block!

A big problem with encoding any information using color is that few people (in my experience) use color printouts. Anything that color is used for should also be conveyed through wording (or otherwise) if it's going to be useful to me during a game.

    The incredible shrinking stat block!

While statblocks can probably be compressed a fair bit, I like that everything is laid out in nice bite-sized chunks. Although it might seem trivial to unpack that a power entry could be used for both melee and ranged attacks, many monsters will have different attack and damage values for both...

    Creating New Templates

Hey all, Bit of a question here: Does anyone know if there are any guidelines for creating new templates for monsters? I've been finding templates pretty useful in my home campaign for adjusting the stats of base monsters and giving them some interesting powers. However there doesn't seem to...
